It's remarkable how whenever one reads the private letters of an author, no matter how successful [e.g. F. Scott Fitzgerald or Ernest Hemingway] they're filled with money anxiety and pleas for cash.

A REAL PYNCHON ANECDOTE!
A literary follower of mine told me that he'd once read a stash of Pynchon's early letters in the private library of a very rich Manhattanite who collected such things.
There were various letters to Pynchon's NYC agent (later, his wife) Melanie Jackson, posted from Mexico, eg. In these Pynchon dwelled obsessively on his need for money, which he called "zucchini."
Sometimes Pynchon wrote the word "zucchini" inside a cartoonish drawing of a large zucchini, or replaced the word with the drawing altogether.

That's why the FCC could fine CBS millions for Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction" but an image of the exact same "wardrobe malfunction" printed in a newspaper isn't legally actionable.
