ARREST MADE IN MANSLAUGHTER INVESTIGATION
On June 16, 2026, members of the Sarnia Police Service responded to a report of a sudden death at a residence in the 400 block of Nelson Street in Sarnia.
Upon arrival, officers located 18-year-old Leia Cooper deceased inside the residence. An investigation was initiated, and a post-mortem examination was requested to determine the cause of death.
In October 2026, the Office of the Chief Coroner determined Leia's cause of death. As a result of those findings and the ongoing investigation, members of the Sarnia Police Service executed a search warrant on October 21, 2026, and arrested a 21-year-old Sarnia man.

Today, Sarnia Police Service members gathered in community and walked alongside our Indigenous community members as we recognized National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Events at Lambton College and the Sarnia-Lambton Native Friendship Centre were a powerful reminder of the lasting impacts of residential schools on Indigenous peoples.
Thank you to the organizers of today's events and to the public for their patience as the march made its way through downtown.
Message from Chief of Police Mike Federico
Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the Sarnia Police Service joins our community and people across Canada to honour the children who never returned home, the Survivors of the residential school system, and the families continuing to live with the heavy burden of intergenerational trauma.
For the Sarnia Police Service, this day carries a distinct and profound meaning. We hold the unique privilege and responsibility of providing policing services to our neighbours at Aamjiwnaang First Nation. Effective, safe policing is fundamentally built upon trust, visibility, and accountability. We recognize that to move forward together, we must first confront the truth of the past, including the historical role law enforcement played in executing colonial directives that deeply harmed Indigenous families and severed cultural ties.
Reconciliation cannot be defined by symbolic words alone; it must be an ongoing, active practice. In my role as the National President of the Coalition for Canadian Police Excellence, I advocate daily for the modernization of Canadian law enforcement through evidence-based, professional education rooted in public trust and procedural justice. True policing excellence means ensuring our frontline practices keep pace with a changing world and actively work to dismantle systemic inequities. Here in Sarnia, that national commitment takes the form of explicit local actions. Over the past few years, we have worked purposefully alongside Aamjiwnaang leadership to strengthen our relationship. Initiatives like our dedicated Aamjiwnaang Community Officer and the collaborative creation of the "Keeper" community policing vehicle—which proudly bears an orange handprint to honour the lives of the children—reflect our dedication to ensuring our services respect and visually reflect the community.
True healing is a shared journey. Today, as Sarnia Police remembers that Every Child Matters, we commit to listening to the guidance of Aamjiwnaang and all Indigenous Elders, Chiefs, Councils, and community members. We pledge to continue walking this path in true partnership, utilizing national standards of leadership and accountability to build a safer, more respectful, and deeply unified community.
We are incredibly proud of Constable Callander for his exceptional work as Aamjiwnaang Community Officer.
Thank you to @OACPOfficial, General Motors and @OnStar Canada for recognizing Constable Callander with the Heroes Beyond the Badge Award for his professional and personal commitment to his role.
A special thank you to @AamjiwnaangFN Chief and Council and community members for helping us celebrate Constable Callander; to Matt Isaac for singing an honour song; and to the family, friends, and dignitaries who joined us to celebrate.
Yesterday, the #OACP, in partnership with General Motors and @OnStar Canada, was proud to recognize the outstanding work of @SarniaPolice Constable Tyler Callander with the Heroes Beyond the Badge Award. We celebrate Cst. Callander for his outstanding commitment to building relationships with the Aamjiwnaang First Nation and its community members.
