Activists against decimation of British food by opening floodgates to lower regulated food. Farms will go bust. Consumers get less choice and higher prices

Joined June 2020
Brexit let subsidised EU farmers undercut British ones - and new trade deals flooded us with cheaper, lower-standard imports from elsewhere. 🇬🇧 farmers lost support, face Brexit red tape on exports and can’t compete. Britain is more food insecure and lost control of food supply
Exactly 10 years since the Brexit vote, the verdict is in.

Burnham is teeing it up for a manifesto commitment - and that’s the right way to do it.
BREAKING: "I will never move ahead of the British public when it comes to Brexit." The PM has ruled out re-joining the EU within 'this parliament', but he would 'like' to see the UK return in his lifetime. trib.al/apj80h1 📺 Sky 501

Hopefully this will help clarify in the minds of many that Israel is absolutely not our ally - - neither in terms of morality/ international law nor in geopolitical loyalties.
Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered Israel to support Argentina over the Falklands, The Telegraph can reveal. The Israeli prime minister told diplomats to change his country’s official position and join Buenos Aires in calling for direct talks over the future of the islands. 🔗 telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2…

Perhaps this is not an argument against European food standards. Perhaps it’s an argument for them. British farmers shouldn’t be required to meet high standards while being undercut by imports produced under practices we wouldn’t permit here.

An SPS agreement begins repairing the damage. But it isn’t the Single Market. Food safety. Food security. Fair competition. We had a system designed to deliver all three. Brexit took us out of it.

And laboratory-confirmed cases of Campylobacter in England were 24.7% higher in 2024 than 2019, and Salmonella cases 23.6% higher. The population-adjusted Salmonella rate in England was 18.8% above its 2019 level in 2024, while comparable EU/EEA rate was 7% below its 2019 level.

When foodborne illness is moving in the wrong direction here while the EU is moving in the other direction, surely we should be asking why. And now we’re being warned that adopting European controls could add hundreds of millions to the cost of some third-country imports.

Brexit promised us control of our borders BUT 👀 what actually happened. Britain left EU food-safety system, struggled for years to implement effective checks on imports, and opened our farmers to greater competition from food produced to standards/practices illegal here. 🧵
😱 “UK fresh produce industry faces £300m hit under EU reset” 🚨 “around four million tonnes of fresh produce imported annually from outside the EU could face additional certification, inspections and border charges.” 🙄Subordinating ourselves is an awful idea. farminguk.com/news/uk-fresh-…

If @andyburnham ditches the pernicious farm tax, it will be a huge relief to many family farms and family businesses. For months we’ve faced uncertainty over succession, investment and whether productive assets would have to be sold simply to meet IHT bill. 1/2
🚜 Some genuinely encouraging news for family farms and businesses this morning. The Times reports that @andyburnham wants to revisit Labour’s IHT changes on farms and begin a new conversation with farmers. The threshold was already lifted from after our protests, which has only alleviated a major problem. Farmers have spent nearly two years warning that this policy threatens succession, investment and food security. This suggests the argument is finally being heard at the very top of government. APR and BPR are not loopholes for passive wealth. For genuine working farms and family businesses, they are about continuity, keeping productive assets together so the next generation can carry on farming. And with food security becoming an increasingly serious national-security issue, Britain should be making it easier to keep viable farms in production, not harder. Burnham says he wants a new conversation with farmers. Good. Let’s have it and begin with scrapping this pernicious tax.

Revisiting the policy would not just be good politics. It would give farming families some desperately needed certainty and recognise that APR and BPR are about keeping viable businesses intact across generations. A rethink would be very welcome.

“In the Treasury there are permanent officials who want to shut down the entire family business sector of the economy…” And everyone thought it was the politicians…
Consultations like this, although cleared by Ministers, normally result from civil service initiatives. Which means that in the Treasury there are permanent officials who want to shut down the entire family business sector of the economy. (1/2) telegraph.co.uk/politics/202…

🚨 Ukraine has gathered clear proof that Starlink is being ordered to scupper Ukrainian operations. It is horrific betrayal. This is why all US technology needs to be replaced by European technology for critical European systems - UK included. ALL of it.
Latest: Zelenskyy tells reporters over WhatsApp that restrictions on Ukraine's Starlink systems remain. Interceptor drones can't function, logistics and operations hobbled. The maximum speed is 161 kph; "exceeding this limit causes the Starlink connection to cut out completely, resulting in the loss of the drone." He says Ukraine has done tests to determine whether SpaceX is truly facing technical issues, as has been told Kyiv by the US side, or if this is a "deliberate operation... to restrict us, cut us off, and prevent us from defending ourselves and protecting our people, both at the front and among the civilian population." He says Ukraine "sent a couple of vehicles equipped with Starlink terminals into European Union territory." "They moved at speeds exceeding 180kph, and the Starlink systems worked perfectly. We have the relevant logs and evidence to prove this." He adds: "The conclusion is clear: the restrictions are in effect within Ukraine but do not apply within the European Union. In other words, this is a planned operation."

This is what Brexit is doing to British food exports and food security. Food and drink exports to the EU are down by more than a third. Sugar: -70% Eggs/egg products: -65% Poultry: -53% The EU still buys most of our agri-food exports, but Brexit put barriers in the way of selling to it. Meanwhile imports rise and Britain’s food trade deficit has ballooned. We were promised global Britain. British farmers got global competition at home and barriers to their best market abroad. Food security is national security. Rebuilding British farming means rebuilding access to Europe.

🗣️ "It is not farming, it is just a mess." Dairy farmer Derek Banbury has some strong views about what his neighbour, Derek Gow, is doing with his land. The two Devon farmers have very different approaches. One believes in intensive farming to produce food, while the other has turned his farm over to nature restoration. Now their relationship is the subject of a new documentary, Derek vs Derek, filmed over four years, which explores the challenges facing both farms... READ MORE: ow.ly/zqwa50ZWsLK

Yep. As I have been warning for a decade (outside of the EU) no EU manufacturer is ever going to sell to British consignees on anything other than Ex Works (come & get it) terms .. Whereas conversely no EU consignee is ever going to buy anything from the GB unless on DDP or DDU (you're responsible for getting it to my door) terms. The British consumer will need to again (pre SM/CU) get used to less (choice) for more cost (*especially if Brexit is ever fully done*) while GB's exporters will continue to sell far less. ..& less again still, as EU importers turn progressively more towards fellow EU (internal market) suppliers.
Replying to @vivamjm
This is one of the many to come! Just waiting for the day we on this plague island full of numpties called the Atlantic Archipelago, who wish to get goods made within Europe will have to drive to the manufacturers location and collect these items and return, as we did pre 1980s!

🚨 Kemi Badenoch says unnamed farmers have persuaded her to rip up any UK–EU agrifood agreement. But the NFU has welcomed the principle of a closer relationship that reduces trade friction, while rightly demanding carve-outs, influence and a workable transition. So a direct question for @ProagriLtd and @NFUtweets: Do you support Badenoch’s pledge to destroy the entire agreement, or do you want the government to negotiate a deal that protects British production while restoring access to our largest food market? British farm sales to the EU have fallen sharply since Brexit. Farmers must not be used as an excuse to preserve the barriers damaging British farming.

Like a rabbit 🐇 caught in the headlights, the British bunny 🐰 left the European warren in search of Brexit sovereignty.. Now it faces a choice: remain frozen while China’s subsidised car industry drives straight over British manufacturing or run home to Europe and beg to be let back in. This is Brexit reality: leaving the protection of the warren, only to discover we are smaller and more vulnerable alone.

Brexit + Covid + Putin’s war in Ukraine + Trump’s economic nationalism = a lethal cocktail for British farming. The treatment is clear: Free Britain from the Brexit trap. Rejoin Europe. Rebuild our resilience. Restore our future.
🚨 REJOINING THE EU WOULD FORCE A RETHINK OF LABOUR’S FAMILY FARM TAX EU membership would not automatically abolish inheritance tax or require Britain to restore the old Agricultural Property Relief system. Taxation remains largely a national responsibility. But rejoining would expose a fundamental contradiction in Labour’s policy. Since Brexit, APR has been restricted to agricultural property in the UK. Before that change, the relief had been extended across the European Economic Area to comply with EU law. If Britain reapplied for membership, Brussels would examine whether European and British farmers and investors were being treated equally and whether our tax system obstructed the free movement of capital. Britain would also normally return to the Common Agricultural Policy, although the precise support arrangements and transition would be negotiated. The CAP is intended to sustain food production, rural communities and farming across generations. That sits uneasily beside a tax policy forcing viable family farms to sell land simply to meet an inheritance-tax bill. Labour would face a choice: defend a policy that accelerates consolidation and weakens food security, or design a system that protects genuine working farms while preventing abuse. That could mean relief tied to active farming, continued agricultural use and clawback provisions when land is sold or developed. Rejoining would not automatically repeal the farm tax but it would make its contradictions much harder to defend. Food security, environmental protection and the survival of family farming must be treated as public goods and not collateral damage in a Treasury spreadsheet.
