The Everfree Forest "attacking" in Season 9 plays on what is supposed to be an in-universe misconception about the forest itself. Ponies view it as an unnatural, eldritch place due to having fantastical, sometimes dangerous plants and animals as well as weather and an ecosystem that work on their own. However, the reality is that strange or dangerous flora and fauna are not unique to the Everfree, and its environment functions like it would in real life because ponies, who use magic to control everything, don't live there. The Everfree Forest "invading" Ponyville in Season 9 doesn't make sense when you look at the key details from the Season 4 premiere. The last time the Tree of Harmony was weakened, the only plant life to grow out of control were those grown from Discord's Plunderseeds. These plants looked and behaved quite differently from the random green vines seen in S9, having black vines with blue thorns, flowers that gave off a noxious gas, producing black thorny clouds and pollen that interfered with unicorn magic. King Sombra should be removed from Season 9 and subsequent content. His character deserves a break. How about instead of bringing him back and retconning his redemption and personality, Grogar (the real one) only summons Queen Chrysalis, Cozy Glow and Lord Tirek to his lair. Some of Sombra's former lines can go to Chrysalis. When she and Tirek refuse to work with anyone, Grogar decides to prove that they must join forces in order to defeat the Mane Six and conquer Equestria by leaving to do so himself, confident that he will fail. He invades the Crystal Empire much like Sombra does, albeit with his own brand of magic, and instead of using mind-controlled ponies, he summons and commands an army of various creatures whose species he created in the past, living up to his moniker of the Father of Monsters. Given his reputation, the Mane Six are initially afraid to confront Grogar, especially Twilight, who fears the harmony she and her friends have brought to Equestria is already ending. With encouragement from Discord, though, they psych themselves up, fight their way through Grogar's army by various means and try to use the Elements against him. He seemingly flees in terror, only to follow them to the Tree of Harmony and ram it, destroying both it and the Elements. Grogar traps and taunts the Mane Six before leaving with a new army of monsters to invade Canterlot. After escaping and doing what they can to protect Ponyville, the Mane Six fight their way through Canterlot before teleporting into the castle and reaching Grogar with Discord's help. After Discord is seemingly injured and gives them a rousing speech, the Mane Six channel the magic of friendship without the Elements and prepare to use it on Grogar much like what happens with Sombra. He flees again, however, but the Mane Six are filled with a new confidence that they can face him again and whatever else come next. Grogar returns to his lair and uses his seeing stone to show the other villains that the Mane Six, thanks to him, have become more powerful than ever, and uses both that and personal threats to coerce them into agreeing to work together with him. King Sombra's overall portrayal in Season 9 is inconsistent and doesn't do him justice. Season 3 established him as cold, no-nonsense, cunning and eldritch, and the IDW comics further expanded on his character, giving him backstory, motivation, insecurities and even redeeming qualities and inner conflict. S9, however, retcons most if not all of that and turns him into a generic, haughty, short-sighted, one-dimensional cartoon villain. Few, if any, characters in G4 have actually lost depth like this. Sombra's physical vulnerabilities are also depicted inaccurately. Back in S3, the Mane Six didn't need to use the Elements of Harmony against him on account of the Crystal Heart, something Discord actually mentions. In fact, he should've been destroyed again once Princess Cadance got the Heart powered back up, but for some reason, he wasn't. Bringing King Sombra back in Season 9 was a mistake. It's an obvious retcon of the events of the "Siege of the Crystal Empire" story arc in the IDW comics, in which Sombra, after being restored by his childhood friend Radiant Hope, retakes his throne and frees the Umbrum, the race of shadow ponies that sent him to the Empire as a foal to conquer it. However, when she sees how evil the Umbrum are, Hope convinces Sombra to choose his own destiny and not let them decide it for him. He uses the Crystal Heart to banish the Umbrum, including himself. As thanks for his sacrifice, the Royal Sisters give him a new body so he and Hope can stay together. Even if the comics aren't canon like the show, it's incredibly unprofessional for the two mediums to contradict each other so blatantly, especially during FiM's final season, when continuity and consistency arguably matter the most. Here's one idea for rewriting Season 9's main storyline. Instead of retiring out of the blue, making dubious claims to justify that or dumping their responsibilities onto Twilight, Celestia and Luna announce the creation of a new upcoming holiday to honor the Mane Six and the newfound harmony they've brought to Equestria: Harmony Day. Twilight will still end up "Twilighting", of course, but not over assuming a role she never wanted or prepared for. Rather, she's afraid that the harmony she and her friends have created won't last, despite everyone else believing that the worst of Equestria's threats are behind them now and they can easily handle whatever comes next. This changes S9's theme from accepting unnecessary change to realizing that there will always be darkness to deal with, as Twilight will later say in the finale. What do you think of this?
