Healthy Coast vs. Armored Coast 🌊 🌱Healthy: Coastal ecosystems can buffer wave energy to dynamically protect infrastructure. Beach dynamics are in part supported by native plants, which allow beaches to grow and contract along with the seasons. 🪨Armored: Hard shoreline structures like seawalls and rock revetments restrict the space needed for seasonal and long-term coastal change. Coastal squeeze occurs when the back of the beach is pinned in place by hardened structures, resulting in beach loss. When we restore and protect our coasts, we build a more resilient future for coastal environments while preserving the unique beauty and recreational opportunities they provide.
