It’s that time of year… to look at cryptic notes from July, ear seed sets, etc to try & make adj. to delayed planting timelines of inbreds for specific hybrid combo
And of course the easier pairs are done leaving inbreds that are the most annoying to work with to try & dial in
Don’t know when in the day I decided to ‘shoot the moon’ and decided to harvest all of diallel project of 1,000 tags, while bopping to other fields to get students harvesting another 800 or so at another field
But both got done by the sunset
Still +/- 10% overall left of mine
Non work, but still a (work office) plant

Lookit this (frustrating plant family to keep alive) thrive - calathea
It actually flowers
There’s this green structure & then an offshoot w/ actual petals etc
I’ve killed plants in this family… a lot but keep coming back
Brought the Bluetooth keyboard out to the field to 10key data entry in the truck while being ‘field adjacent’ for questions from the undergrads harvesting today 😆
‘Past Lisa’ coming in clutch with reminders set from a year ago
Thanks, past me, you hardly let me down (and if / when you do… don’t worry, I know you were probably busy & something slipped by)
😆
George loves field season.
It means stinky clothes to lay on. He’s fully asleep and snoot deep in the stink here 😻
Having to look up ‘cultural references’ / phrases so I can better explain to students when they look at me like … 🤔
Today: ‘perfectly cromulent’
Thanks, Simpsons
What’s more annoying than trudging through standing water to pollinate… waterlogged tassel bags that need to be swapped out …
End of season sometimes just piles on with the annoyances …
🤷♀️
20 min ago in field: (aggressive sneeze)
Me to me: pollens shedding
5 min ago in field: smells sweeter… bags are a tad damp though…. But could probably start with some selfs now that shootbag dance party is done…
Solo person in the field this soggy am?
Saturday morning dance party to Taylor as I shootbag I guess
🎶🎶🎶
Whoever decided on 30” row crop spacing as the standard wasn’t someone with hips wearing a field apron loaded with pollination supplies .. that’s for sure
Is it even a pollinating season if you don’t get drenched trying to get just a few more male sources crossed in your diallel?
It starts out with a sprinkle and a hope… then getting damp and a swear… and then calling it quits when the tassel bag is wet noodle
Just a girl … standing in a field …
waiting for temp to warm up and be able to see what tassels are fit to set up pollinations

Yet another flooding rain has sent Ames above a foot of rain since the start of July, with 11 days left to go in the month. 🤯
2.5 hour copy / paste session on regulatory website is now done
Started out as a best of music jam session…
Now feeling very …
Guess what?

Here is the radar estimated rainfall across Iowa since the morning of July 2nd. The heaviest rainfall was near Ames to Ankeny where estimated 8-12 inches of rainfall occurred. Note, in some areas, the radar estimates were underdone. #iawx
