Very sad news to share: 1990 Cincinnati Reds World Champion Todd Benzinger passed away at the age of 63, @WLWT has learned. The New Richmond H.S. grad caught the final out of the ‘90 World Series, made Cincinnati his home, and was very involved with Reds community events. RIP.

So happy for him. It's awesome to see.
Haliburton's emotions, getting choked up postgame, said it all. This meant everything to him. All the work behind the scenes, when no one is watching or cheering you on. He made it back. 16 months later. And they won the game.

Cool to see a noticeable amount of Pacers jerseys in the stands at road venues. Still getting used to that.

Edge absolutely rules and this city is lucky to get to claim him as one of their own.
Edgerrin James says that he used his first NFL signing bonus to buy two rundown buildings in a drug-affected neighborhood in his hometown and turn them into a recreational center for local kids “I mean, it’s appropriate. You know, them things you’re supposed to do. That’s your way of really giving back and helping and showing. You can help a lot of people by making one move. One move can change the structure of so many other kids. Like right now, from Immokalee, we got four guys that’s in the NFL right now, and those same four guys used to come to that same building that we opened up and that we had around. And it was actually pretty cool to actually see that, you know, they were a part of it.” “Exactly. And that’s what it’s about. You’re showing them that it’s possible, and that’s part of my whole MO, man. Like, look, I’m going to come across as normal, and I’m going to do all the same things y’all do. So I’m showing you that it’s possible. Right now, you got to dig into it a little bit more to say, ‘Okay, what separated me from them?’ And that’s when that discipline and that hard work and really knowing what it’s going to take, or doing what it’s going to take, to get there.” “Yeah, you got D.J. Swearinger, you got Mackensie Alexander, you got D’Ernest Johnson that played for the Cleveland Browns, and then you got the Pro Bowler, J.C., that played for the New England Patriots. You know, all four of those kids, they used to be around. They’re all out of Immokalee, and that’s what it’s about. To have kids that’s in the community that actually see you do what you do, and they follow in those footsteps.” “I got a million names from them. They actually make you feel old. Like, they really the ones that make you feel old. And then you go back, you go through some of the pictures, and you see the kids out there doing what they were doing. Like, dang, I’ve really been around a long time. And to see J.C. go to the Pro Bowl, you’re like, man, I watched this kid from birth. But it’s a good feeling to know that you got people coming from your area that you inspired.”

Good leadership here from the Colts' best player this season
"You have to take responsibility... The success of coaches, general managers... is riding in some part on you." #Colts kicker Spencer Shrader on the firing of Chris Ballard, and if he and the players take responsibility:

Major positive update for Butler on the injury front. Jalen Jackson is considered day-to-day after his injury over the weekend, while Samu Adler has been fully cleared to practice. Couldn’t have asked for a better update.
Positive update on two of our Dawgs.

Something I'm having trouble with is everyone bringing up a "long" rebuild. Will it be long? Maybe! But it's already been long. Colts will be six seasons past their last playoff berth and eight from the last playoff win. It's not like they're flushing The Good Old Days here.

I just don't think there's a gigantic difference between gross football and grossly mediocre football. I can probably count on one hand the amount of Colts' games I've truly enjoyed 2021-present. If you win four games, that sucks, but going 8-9 in a winnable division sucks, too.

I get rebuilds are tough, but the one thing you have to give your fans is hope and the Colts haven't consistently provided that in a long time. 4-13 is better than 8-9 if there is hope attached to the former and not the latter.
But getting back to respectability is a long process. And the new regime won't have a 2027 1st rounder, plus several cornerstone players in final year of contract (Buck, Q). Fan base is angry and wanted a change. Understandable. But brace yourself for some lean years.

As I mentioned in my Substack column, I am pretty damned certain that Peyton has no interest in saving the day back in Indy. Might they reach out to get his thoughts? Absolutely. They should. But based on what I know (and @mchappell51 had this first), Peyton has no interest.

A sorry era for this franchise is over, one that became mind-numbingly stale and sucked the life out of the fanbase. Chris Ballard's tenure started with promise. In the end, it never delivered. Column from me, free to read: nytimes.com/athletic/7704955…

I think the lack of producing any tangible results for the last five-plus seasons may have also worked against him, but who knows?
Chris Ballard is one of the genuinely good people in football. But as strange as it may sound, I think his loyalty, belief in people and kindness sometimes worked against him. The #Colts went all-in last year after starting 8-2 by trading two 1st-round picks for Sauce Gardner, then gave a massive deal to Daniel Jones off a torn Achilles. It has not worked so far.

Advice? Sure, but why on earth would he come back here to be a general manager?
Oooh, Dan Patrick just said that he got information that we should expect that the Colts' first call will be to Peyton Manning for advice and possibly to bring him in as the next GM.

True, but I’d argue the overall roster has clearly declined from its 2021ish peak as Ballard never recaptured some of his early draft successes.
Replying to @Schultz975
Obvious issue was never finding the quarterback. The most critical moment, if the rumors were true in how much they liked him, was when they missed drafting Jordan Love as the Packers moved up to grab him.
