Here’s a story for you. We started filming without owning the title and had to do alternates. Taft Broadcasting owned the title Ghostbusters as part of their half-hour sitcom starring Larry Storch and Forrest Tucker (F-Troop) and a gorilla chasing ghosts. I had never heard of it. They didn’t have proton packs or Bill Murray. Columbia paid $500,000 to buy the name, but they really should have paid Dean Martin, from whom I first heard the term. In the film Scared Stiff (1953), he and Jerry Lewis (check out his acrobatic stair descent) are in an old haunted castle, and Lizabeth Scott asks Dean: “Who are you guys?” And Dean answers: “You’ve heard of Trustbusters and Gangbusters, we’re Ghostbusters!” For my research writing the first movie, I watched every single ‘ghost’ comedy ever made. Bowery Boys, Hope and Crosby, Abbot and Costello, Martin and Lewis all did such films. Happy Halloween 2026.

Iron Maiden's Nicko McBrain reveals he was invited to play golf with Donald Trump, but turned down the offer because he thinks the president and his "bunch of cronies" should be "put in jail": “I’m not politically inclined, although I must be because I have my thoughts about him. I’m not amused by the narcissism, and all this kerfuffle about the Epstein files and whatnot, and especially the debauched war that he’s put on Iran... My last word on Trump and his bunch of cronies is, they should be put in jail." variety.com/2026/music/news/…

Sunday, 09/30/62: JFK warns against institutional defiance. If this country should ever reach the point where any man or group of men... can defy commands of our court then indeed the American experiment has failed. 2026: Trump is the embodiment of JFK’s warning 64 years ago.

This is not a photograph. It’s called Oak Grove, and it was painted in 1887 by Ivan Shishkin. Every furrow of bark, every leaf, every blade of grass in the shade of these old oaks was put there by hand. Shishkin painted trees so faithfully that his canvases are less like pictures of a forest and more like portraits of the trees themselves, each one rendered down to its smallest detail. He spent his life wandering the woods near his home outside Saint Petersburg, studying nature so closely that Russia gave him a nickname: the singer of the Russian woods. What I love most is that these oaks feel so alive, you can almost feel the coolness of their shade on your skin. And like very old trees in real life, they make you feel small in the best way possible, as if they have seen everything and are telling you that it will all be alright...

In 1964, a 13-year-old student at London's Barbara Speake Stage School was hired as an extra for the Beatles' first movie, A Hard Day's Night. He was sent to the Scala Theatre and placed in the audience while the Beatles filmed their concert sequence. His job was simple: be one of the screaming young Beatles fans. When the movie came out, he looked for himself but couldn't find the footage. Thirty years later, producer Walter Shenson gave him the unused film from that day. He went through it until he finally found his 13-year-old self in the audience. The performance was "You Can't Do That," which had been cut from the finished film. The kid in the middle of this photo went on to have quite a music career of his own. That 13-year-old was Phil Collins.

Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn didn’t stay quiet. At the band’s U.S. tour opener in Orlando, he took a Palestinian flag from the crowd, held it high, and told thousands of people: “Don’t forget this. Ever. Stand your position. Don’t ever be neutral.” That’s the standard. Not vague statements. Not both-sides hedging. Not silence dressed up as professionalism. Artists with platforms get a choice: use it or hide behind it. Albarn chose the flag. He chose the line. He chose not to pretend this is some distant tragedy you can clap through and forget by the encore. Never forget. Never stay neutral. Free Palestine. 🇵🇸
