I don't really understand the Youtube Algorithm, but it seems to be promoting a podcast interview I did last fall with Lex Fridman on Existentialism, Nihilism, and the Search for Meaning. It was a pretty fun and wide-ranging discussion. Take a look!

Very excited for this new adventure!
I hadn’t planned to say that the arts and humanities are “the soul of higher education” - I just heard it coming out of my mouth. And maybe there’s a better way to say it. But that seems like a decent start.

I’d be interested to know more about these data. I had the impression that we don’t have good data on loneliness going back beyond 10 years or so. The link to the first table is broken, but the second paper says as much. Thoughts @ianmcorbin1 ?
The evidence that there's been a big increase in loneliness seems underwhelming to me.

Hugely enjoying my graduate seminar this semester on German Idealism, taught through the lens of Michael Rosen’s fascinating new book. Great students and, as usual, MR’s work is equally rich in erudition and provocation! Anyone else with thoughts about it? amazon.com/Shadow-God-Passag…
Every time I go for a slow run with my wife, my VO2 max is terrible.
I tell he it's because I love her so much that being near her makes my heart race.
She says it's because I talk too much.
Probably we're both right.
Just out of curiosity, what name do you associate most with the phrase “liberalism of fear,” and what does the phrase mean to you? If the answers are nobody and nothing, so be it. Trying to get a sense for the going interpretation of the phrase these days.
So proud of the wonderful students and staff at Dunster House! Watch the new Housing Day video for 2023, set to the music of “In the Heights”…

via @NYTimes Anyone been to the “Bombay Beach Biennale?” It’s about art, philosophy, community, and the desert. Sounds like a pretty amazing combination! nytimes.com/2019/04/12/style…
Thanks for the recommendation, @Morrismedici! Yet another reaso to return to Rome!
Totally fascinated, once again, by Rome! Who are the Italian philosophers and writers I should be reading to ensure a reason for coming back?
Saw the amazing School of Athens by Raphael today. While the 25 year old was painting this enormous mural at the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican, between 1509 and 1511, Michaelangelo was down the hallway painting the Sistine Chapel. Those were some good years for art!
Shklar's study of Hegel grounds his political phil in a broader epist. project. "How do we know," she writes, "is the great question of philosophy, ancient and modern" that Hegel sets out to answer. Maybe I've read too much Heidegger, but isn't this the wrong place to start?
