I'm very very sad tonight. I just learned that Stephen Biesty passed away in 2024 at 63... He is one of my favorite artist. Rest in peace.

I'm the kind of guy who tries to see value in all cultures, but if you're executing people for having sex then sorry, you're just barbaric. I am a better person than you, my values and culture are superior to yours, and I hope your culture perishes. Also goes for blasphemy laws
For those of you who are still being mislead by the fake news of the execution in Saudi. Here is what really happened. Now judge it yourself. Nazrul Islam and Sithi Akter, two Bangladeshi nationals employed as cleaning workers for the Bin Laden Group in Mecca, became romantically involved while commuting to work. Nazrul lived in a residential villa in Hayyal Iskan, while Sithi resided in Batha Kuraysh. In May 2023, the two engaged in illicit relations in a secluded stairwell room between Gates 85 and 87 of Masjidul Haram. Nazrul had asked an Indian acquaintance to stand guard downstairs, but the friend secretly recorded the encounter on video. Later, when the Indian national attempted to make advances toward Sithi and was rejected, he leaked the video online. The video quickly went viral, prompting immediate intervention by Saudi authorities, who successfully apprehended all three individuals. The Indian national received a 20-year prison sentence for recording and distributing the footage. Nazrul Islam and Sithi Akter were detained immediately following their arrest in May 2023. Nazrul had originally arrived in Saudi Arabia from Bangladesh between November 10 and 13, 2022. Following his arrest in May 2023, he remained incarcerated throughout a lengthy three-and-a-half to four-year judicial process leading up to October 2026. Throughout this period, official protocol dictated that the Saudi government notify the employer (sponsor) rather than foreign government authorities. Various rumors circulated online falsely claiming that the individuals were pilgrims performing Umrah or that the charges stemmed merely from public displays of affection. While the defendants were unmarried, the severity of the legal outcome was not solely based on the act of zina (adultery). Because the offense took place within the sacred precincts of Masjidul Haram, the court determined that they had severely violated the sanctity and honor of Islam's holiest mosque. Consequently, senior judges of the Supreme Court handed down the death penalty as an exemplary punishment aligned with Quranic principles and the Sunnah.

I'll say what a lot of people in finance won't say out loud. Plenty of jobs out there still pay $17 to $23 an hour. Full time, that's roughly $2,947 to $3,987 a month before taxes. Now go find rent under $1,700. Add a car payment, insurance, gas, groceries, utilities, your phone bill. That's before health insurance comes out of your check. Before student loans. Before a kid gets sick and you're out $350 at urgent care. Before your car needs new brakes you didn't budget for. I've worked in personal finance for over a decade, so believe me, I'm not anti budget. Budgets matter. But there's a point where telling someone making $20 an hour to "cut back more" stops being useful advice. You cannot budget your way out of $3,700 in unavoidable monthly costs on a $3,000 paycheck. The math isn't a discipline problem. Sometimes the spreadsheet isn't broken. The income is just too low to cover what it costs to be alive right now.

Nearly every phone and computer on Earth relies on one plain-text file to know what time it is. When a country changes its clocks with a few weeks’ notice, or Morocco pauses daylight saving for Ramadan, someone has to update that file. Since 02005, that someone has been Paul Eggert, a computer science professor at UCLA, who does it as a volunteer.  Take a look at this great data visualization to see the full story:  na2.hubs.ly/H08qtQC0

A couple of years ago I was hoping the cat distribution system would send me a cute tiny kitten. Instead, I got a roughed up, dirty, mean old Tom cat. I called him Bruiser. It took 1.5 years before I could even pet him even though I fed him every day. Last night he lay in my arms and cuddled against me on the patio couch. He kneaded against me. My heart is bursting with love for this boy. He is a soulmate cat. You don’t get many of those in a lifetime. Never doubt the cat distribution system!!! CDS is always right.

I had to put down my cat today. Was told months ago she had months to live. And deteriorated fast. A decade ago my Mom found a kitten in her engine and I got a cat. She was my special little kitty, who’d always jump on my keyboard while I was working. Thank you Luna.

The problem with The Last Jedi is twofold 1. The prospect of Luke trying to kill his nephew is an incredibly huge gimme. I mean, it is... 'Laurie Strode decides she's in love with Michael Myers' OOC. But you have to accept this for the story to work. 🧵

Maturing is realizing that gangster rappers like Snoop Dogg (a self-proclaimed pimp who’s been married to the same woman for 27 years) and Rick Ross (who worked as a Florida corrections officer) are just fictional personas. Meanwhile, the dude prancing around a stage in ‘hammer pants’ was an ACTUAL gangster who pumped fear into people. Crazy when you think about it.

Our true enemies are the ghoulish demagogues who are trying to tell Americans to hate our countrymen. We have to fight back against the Tucker Carlsons and the Hasan Pikers, the Candace Owenses and the Nick Fuenteses, and all the rest of that grifting bunch of demagogues.
Most American voters want Republicans to reject people like Candace Owens, and Democrats to reject people like Hasan Piker.

I bought a box of slides in a Los Angeles warehouse for twenty dollars. Thanksgiving, 2019. An antique store was emptying an old warehouse. Inside was a pile of Kodachrome that almost went nowhere. The woman selling it said the slides had belonged to a photographer whose house had been liquidated after he died. The boxes were addressed to Hugh Stevens Bell. Bell was born in St. Joseph, Missouri, on January 10, 1899. He served in the Navy in 1918, finished Western Reserve University with honors, edited the campus paper, and worked at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. He wrote for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Nature Magazine, and the Journal of Geology. In the 1930s he joined the U.S. Indian Service and then soil conservation work. A son was born in Flagstaff in 1936. He did hydraulic research at Caltech and in 1942 published a USDA study on stratified flow in reservoirs. National Geographic published his photographs along the way. He lived out his last years in Sierra Madre and died there in 1989 at ninety. What I found was not a few snapshots. It was a working life in color. Desert roads. Cars stuck in the mud. Families standing in the sun. Monument Valley. Native communities of the Southwest in the 1940s and 1950s. Mixed in were the personal frames. His people. His trips. The ordinary days that never make a magazine. Kodachrome is why these still look alive. The dyes hold. Reds stay red. Skies stay blue. Seventy and eighty years later the film has not faded the way so many other color processes have. You can still feel the heat coming off the dirt. I scanned them. I put them online. That box is what started my own personal collecting of what I've since learned is called vernacular photography. Since then I have collected tens of thousands of snapshots, slides and photo albums and organized them into many different digital albums on Flickr. Everything after that, the estate sales, the lockers, the orphaned pictures, began with the Hugh Stevens Bell Collection, sitting in a warehouse waiting to be thrown away. Here is one of them. The full collection is here if you are a fan of the American Southwest you will enjoy this trip back in a time machine: flickr.com/photos/thomashawk…

Bay Area friends: A friend found these small kittens behind a gas station and we've been trying to find them a home for almost two months. For now, they live in a small bathroom. Would you consider adopting? They are vaxxed, neutered, and incredibly affectionate. Please help!

I think it’s even worse than it seems. They are probably seeing this coming as a result of their policies. Instead of changing the policies they are laying the groundwork to say “actually this is a good thing” when it does happen…

A research into cat behavior shows that domestic cats regard humans as social peers rather than superiors, often perceiving their owners as large, awkward kittens. Far from being aloof or defiant, a cat’s apparent indifference stems from a profound interspecies mismatch in social expectations. As anthrozoologist John Bradshaw explains, cats—unlike dogs—never evolved to recognize humans as dominant leaders or authority figures. Instead, they filter all interactions through an exclusively feline framework. Behaviors like kneading on your lap or licking your hair are not mere displays of affection; they are the same grooming and bonding rituals cats reserve for close kin or pride members. In their eyes, we are simply enormous, somewhat clumsy fellow cats who require inclusion in the group. This absence of hierarchical deference accounts for cats’ frequent disregard of commands or household rules. Treating us as equals, they follow cat-to-cat social protocols in every encounter. The “gifts” of dead prey on the doorstep or constant shadowing around the home are acts of care toward what they see as a big, furless, rather inept companion. Recognizing this mindset transforms the human-cat relationship from one based on authority and obedience to one of mutual companionship. It turns out that while many owners believe they have domesticated their cats, the cats themselves are quietly convinced they are patiently tending to their oversized, adopted family members. Bay Area friends: would you consider opening your home to these two cuddly cats? A friend found them behind a gas station. Their sibling, a black cat, got adopted, but it appears no one likes orange cats. They are being kept in a bathroom for the time being and need a home.
A friend found these kittens behind a Bay Area gas station. They are tame, vaccinated, and incredibly affectionate. Unfortunately, she's unable to keep them and I'm trying to find them a home. They are at risk of going to a shelter. Bay Area people, are you open to adopting?

The problem is that these people have already failed in the “go find meaning” part and turn to politics because the notion that the world is broken but they are ok is more palatable than the notion that they are broken and there is no easy fix.

I think the fundamental disconnect here is that you wants politics to solve man's search for meaning and I want politics to deliver a prosperous, safe, free society in which everyone can go find meaning in something other than politics.
