Vassar is for kids who don’t care about the financial ROI of their degree. They go there to major in English/Drama/Art History and get a low-paying knowledge economy job in New York where the degree still has a decent amount of clout.
How would people characterize the prestige of a college like Vassar these days and how it’s changed in the last 25+ years? I feel like it had some specific cultural cache when I was younger, and I have no sense of whether it’s persisted. Also curious about Middlebury.

Adding “crone” to my list of words kept alive by the New York Post alongside “straphanger.”
“A kid-hating crone has turned a luxury Upper East Side building into a living hell for her upstairs neighbors — driving at least three families out of their apartments all while racking up nearly $88,000 in unpaid rent, a new lawsuit claims. Anne Stockton, 72, is being sued by the owner of 85 East End Avenue for allegedly tormenting the family of five currently living in the unit directly above her cushy, $1,775-a-month rent-stabilized apartment on the 10th floor.” nypost.com/2026/10/30/us-new…

I think it looked better before. Zoom in on the after and there’s a big McDonalds 🤭
This is Milan, 40 years apart. We are not America. We don't need giant billboards covering our historic city centres. European cities are not advertising spaces. They are our shared cultural heritage. And some things are worth protecting.

Driving down to my parents’ house tomorrow morning, and if I don’t see at least one house that is TPed tomorrow, I will be very disappointed! RETVRN to tradition (mischief night)!

Trick-or-treating is particularly American, a tradition that is optimized for the population density of Levittown.

I like that every time we’re in a new room in Proust he has to describe to you the way it smells.

The exclusivity of having lived so far uptown that half of the maps of “Manhattan” don’t include your neighborhood.

Interestingly Israel’s potential first Mizrahi prime minister has an Ashkenazified last name (Azencot which became Eisenkot).

Maybe I’m just overexposed to it, but her accent sounds noticeable but pretty tame. It can get a lot thicker than this!
1992 a meteor hit her car. Back in New Jersey and New York almost everybody I knew had “the accent”.

What is the oldest political news story you can remember? For me it's Joe Biden being selected as Obama's VP.
