So...I feel like some additional context is necessary re: Vlad & this bit of beef specifically, bc some folks are too young to remember.

Vlad is whack for a myriad of reasons. But in this you can tell he saw a Black woman and a predominantly white university and tried to use his whiteness against her. DISGUSTING.

These types of responses are why people don’t think you move in good faith. Instead of engaging the actual critique, you resort to name calling and misdirection. And yes, though not at all relevant, I’ve been fired twice. Both times, it was for advocating for justice through my platforms. In contrast, you’re using yours to try to get someone fired. Why double down instead of just saying “I went too far in my response to a comment that I disliked”?

Black Americans experience the most hate crimes of any group in America. They live at the bottom of every indicator of well being. They face rampant and documented discrimination in employment, housing, you name it. I really wish pundits discussing campus protests and anti-Semitism would stop using us as the comparison group for what would not be tolerated.

No Vlad. This doesn’t “clear the air.” You’re literally arguing that you were weaponizing your power and privilege to threaten a Black woman’s job. And why? Because she criticized you on Twitter about your power and privilege. You could’ve disagreed with @MorganJerkins stance —I actually didn’t object to you intervening in the conversation, even though I disagreed with your point— without threatening her. This is Karen shit.

Uncomfortable truth time. The world feels entitled to Black American culture. We share it so freely because sharing it has been one of the only ways we’ve been seen. Our intellectual, political, and scientific contributions have erased and delegitimized, but the world still agrees we can make you dance, laugh etc.
Since that culture remains our biggest export, we sell it. Because we sell it, every one consumes it, then thinks it’s theirs. It’s not. Our culture is like any other, based on shared history, pain, ingenuity, inspiration, and pressure. There was a tax paid. Like ANY other culture in EXISTENCE you can’t walk in and walk out without an understanding of that tax at the very least. It would be silly to think that.
To think that we should just be fully giving of our art, experience, and cultural invention to the world with nothing so much as a conversation would make us the workhorses of the world.
No.
I wouldn’t expect that from any group in the diaspora. I would expect that if Beyonce did a dancehall album tomorrow, there would be a conversation. I would expect that if Kendrick went Afro Beats and opened a Jollof restaurant we would talk about it. And the obligation we’d have to each other is that the conversation be had with love. That’s the only time we fail, not when we don’t talk about our differences, but when we war about them. But, we are different, and that’s okay.

This is how I feel about the 5% cuts proposed for all departments in Houston except police and fire

"The overwhelming topic at hand was the hundreds of thousands of cases that have been suspended by the Houston Police Department over the past 8 years as a result of inadequate staffing."
For the record, marking something as caused by inadequate staffing doesn't make it true.

It's time to start pulling city council budget clips again. Q: If you had more funds, could you reach more people with the city's anti-gang youth program?
A: Yes. One of the ways we shaved off the budget is we lost a counselor from the program.
SaKanda Badu Fro retweeted
They way the Houston mayor and police chief would say that youth are "driving violence crime" and yet when I ask about more money for youth programs in the city it's crickets.
Replying to @ReenNahMean
the people most obsessed with "repeat offenders" should know that NYC summer youth employment reduced felony arrests by nearly 1/4th. In Denver supportive housing led to a 40% reduction in arrests for people with frequent justice contact. these are genuine public safety policies.
