Amazing artist gave me permission to use her character in a novel! I wrote a little short for her. We walked along the main street, searching the shops for anything that interested us. “Why can’t you be a normal mage?” Dellan sighed. I gave him a playful shove. “I’d be happy to let Ernard take my spot.” “Please don’t, that guy could probably kill a troll by rambling to it.” We continued looking in vain; it wasn’t surprising that they didn’t sell magical gear for mages from another continent. I happened to look down one alley and saw a shop at the end. It was old, rotted, and covered in various magical symbols ranging from alchemy to others I couldn’t recognize. “What about that shop?” “Of course…” Dellan shook his head. “You would want to go into that shop.” “What’s that supposed to mean?” He sighed, then led me over to it. The moment I crossed the doorway, I understood. A pair of golden eyes, the color of alchemical gold, stared up at us through the dimly lit shop. The incense seemed to swirl with her voice. “Welcome in, you two. I’ve been expecting the Lunaris student.” She gave a toothy grin at me. Dellan gave me an understanding pat on the shoulder. As much as he liked to tease me, he understood I had some kind of curse from the universe with crazy beastkin women. “Have you now? And how did you know of my homeland?” She stood up from her stool and circled around us. If it weren’t for her oversized witch hat and a cape that looked like it held the midnight sky, one could easily mistake her for a dancer at a king’s palace. “I had a little crystal ball tell me,” she purred. Dellan gave me an “are you serious?” look as she suddenly ran a claw under my chin. She looked into my eyes. “It also told me you’d show up here looking for new magics.” I just looked at her, not rejecting nor accepting her advances. “Well, do you have any—” I felt the familiar pull of magic as two crystals on a golden chain unfurled from her back, dancing through the air. “Of course I do.” She flicked my chin with a claw, then stepped back and sat down on her counter, crossing her legs. “What kind of witch would I be if I didn’t?” I swallowed audibly. “How much for the relic?” “Me,” she said, one tooth hooked on her lip. “I have other things for sale, at a price.” “Sable’s going to be pissed,” Dellan said, looking all too happy to witness the mess that had just brewed.

"Most pantheons I know don't have a convenient second dimension or leyline the way the kitsune do. They have afterlives. Messing with those is… less predictable. I don't know how forgiving other gods are." "Is this the kind of thing you did before you met me?" "Yes." She patted my back once. "I like the ambition. Let's find a less final place to visit before we start testing doors into hell." "Fair. I'll look for better targets." I held out a discarded sheet. "Frostfire. Come here." The hatchling scrambled over, took the paper in both foreclaws, and began methodically tearing it to pieces. I gave him a small pat. Sable watched. "You turned him into an evidence destroyer." "He's very good at it." She scratched under his jaw. "You're lucky he's cute." Her tail slid across my back as she leaned in, the cold night air sharpening around us as her scent settled close, warm vanilla and freshly cut apple, like she'd carried it in from somewhere better than a campsite. My research had not been the only reason she came over. "I am pretty lucky," I said, and settled an arm around her. The fire had burned low enough that it barely lit the clearing, but it was enough to catch in her eyes and turn them pure gold against the dark, her tan skin holding what warmth was left like she'd stored up the whole day in it. "I know we haven't talked much since that night. Part of me is still trying to fit all of it together, Cain, you, whatever family is supposed to mean now." "I know. I feel the same. Slow is fine." I leaned in. She closed her eyes. The kiss was unhurried, quiet enough that I could hear the fire settling beside us; I let it last until Frostfire decided he required equal attention and shoved his head between us with a demanding chirp. Sable broke away, laughing under her breath, and gave him a quick peck on the snout. He opened his mouth and chirped louder. "Look at you. Perfect timing." I pulled her a little closer, the clearing gone cold everywhere except where she was. "We'll just keep taking the adventure as it comes." "Yeah." #CatGirl #FantasyBooks #storytelling

I can't decide what version of my character Piri to use. So far she has one giant (albiet unwilling) drider kill from her backpack.
