There are very few truly defining moments in public service, but TX Legislators are amidst one right now, and aren’t wasting it.
So proud of everyone who broke quorum to stand on the right side of the civil rights fight of our lifetime.
History is watching.

Today's STAAR failure has created unnecessary stress for our districts, students, and parents. Beyond being an inefficient measure of student success, we now know it's also an ineffective, unreliable, and dysfunctional system. It's time we reassess this assessment.

I remember meeting w/student leaders, who felt that a #StudentEmpowerment framework would benefit their learning. As a result the #StudentCongress was founded! Let’s pause the proposed changes and listen to them. It’s concerning if our future leaders feel they will be stifled.🍎
HISD wants to suppress student voice by replacing us with “district-sanctioned” students. This isn’t student voice: It’s student suppression & tokenization. Tweet to @Houston_ISD to tell them what you think.

As much as I’ve talked about the historic nature of @KamalaHarris’ election as VP, the magnitude had not sunk until I saw her with her hand on the bible. I’m overwhelmed with pride and looking forward to a day where a woman in the White House is the norm.

Thank you! I would be nowhere without the women whose footsteps I dance in. While reciting my poem, I wore a ring with a caged bird—a gift from @Oprah for the occasion , to symbolize Maya Angelou, a previous inaugural poet. Here’s to the women who have climbed my hills before.
I have never been prouder to see another young woman rise! Brava Brava, @TheAmandaGorman! Maya Angelou is cheering—and so am I.

I've always loved this #MLK quote, but I’ve grown more and more aware of how greed and selfishness tear at the fabric of community and shared humanity, while compassion strengthens them. Empathy is powerful.

Today I file HB 613, to make the TEA Commissioner an elected position.
Policy for our public schools should be informed by & accountable to parents, teachers, and taxpayers.
The pandemic has magnified the need for a TEA that is responsive to the people of Texas.
