🪸New paper alert 🚨
New research published in Coral Reefs, "Short-term stress testing predicts subsequent natural bleaching variation", led by Dr. Carlo Caruso (@CoralResilience), with our own @shedd_aquarium Research Biologist, Dr. Shayle Matsuda, as a co-author.
We experimentally tested the heat tolerance of fragments of corals in Kāneʻohe Bay. We revisited the source colonies at the height of a subsequent natural bleaching event and found that our experimental heat test had strong predictive value for bleaching phenotypic outcomes.

ALT Fig. 2 Experimental heat stress and natural bleaching responses. A: Curves show ftted relationship of each sample’s relative Fv/Fm and accumulated heat stress (degree weeks spent above the 25 °C baseline) during the experiment. Predictive power of accumulated heat on feld bleaching score (FBS) is shown in the tile plot for each 1% reduction in relative Fv/Fm. Cumulative heat stress dosage producing a 20% Fv/Fm decline (ED20Fv/Fm) was used as a measure of heat stress performance. Histogram shows distribution of ED20 Fv/Fm values for all fragments. B: Relationship between FBS and ED20Fv/Fm. Symbiont composition of fragment source colony is shown in density curves on both axes

Proud that Dr. Yasmin Quintana from @SheddResearch is recognized for her past and current work in leading conservation efforts for freshwater species and habitats. iucn.org/news/202501/iucn-sp…
A new study co-authored by @IUCN reveals that 24% of freshwater species are at high risk of extinction. However, the extinction risk for many species, including molluscs, remains unknown due to insufficient data. iucn.org/press-release/20250…
Shedd Aquarium has partnered with the @IUCNssc to strengthen freshwater conservation, close the assessment gap for species like freshwater mussels, and make a difference for these critical organisms that support healthy ecosystems. sheddaquarium.org/care-and-c…

New work from our coral researchers, titled “Heat stress and bleaching in corals: a bioenergetic model", uses a bioenergetic model of coral-algal symbiosis to test mechanisms by which heat stress causes coral bleaching.
