Thank you @WritesRights !
My amazing colleague @SherineT on why she quit journalism to lobby the UN to ensure #humanrights are better protected - not just in conflicts and crises, but for all of us. h/t @Donahuefilm #WildVoices

Appalling killing by SaF forces in Sudan
SAF air strikes kill 102 unarmed civilians in Nyala, with a 113 more wounded during the attack. Bombs have reportedly hit residential areas across the city, including the Tongonaj Market. The attack comes as part of a broad aerial campaign in Sudan with the SAF continuing to target civilian areas despite calls for de-escalation and peace.

Last minute, just as Nusseibeh was getting up to leave, Sudan takes the floor and asks why she calls it a “civil war” in Sudan - that is what UAE calls it but not UN terminology. Nusseibeh doesn’t answer instead repeats that she’s independent and Sudan would be a priority.

Sudan asks Lana Nusseibeh: Would you back an independent investigation of your country supplying weapons in Sudan's civil war & its mass rapes? Doesn't answer but reiterates a commitment to Art 100 of UN Charter & that she has left UAE foreign ministry. Says to refer Qs to them [no acknowledgment of UAE's documented role in the war & resulting humanitarian crisis]

Still not a word on the need for accountability #sudan
Lana Nusseibeh on UAE [documented] role in aiding/abetting atrocities in Sudan: Horrific conflict in Sudan will be a litmus test of the incoming SG; stopping it...will be my top priority I have taken leave of absence from UAE MFA [hard to separate her candidacy from her country as she has repeatedly denied UAE's role supplying weapons to RSF] Will support fact-finding missions

As the UNSC considers UAE diplomat Lana Nussbeih's candidacy for UN SecGeneral, it's worth having a look at a story I wrote in Jan 2024 about UAE's effort during her tenure as ambassador to the UN 2 suppress scrutiny of its activities in Sudan and beyond. devex.com/news/exclusive-the…

Artificial intelligence has dominated the news cycle this week, raising questions about how we govern these powerful tools. @Amnesty is calling for an international regulatory framework that is not controlled by just a few powerful states and companies.   We, instead need a human rights based, international and multistakeholder approach that is inclusive. States must immediately insist on a pause to the development and deployment of the most harmful AI technologies.

In my article about rape of Palestinians in Israeli prisons, one person who spoke on the record about having been raped was Sami al-Sai, a freelance journalist in the West Bank. He now reports that Israeli authorities recently delivered a warning to him through a relative: Drop media interviews or wind up back in prison. I wish Prime Minister Netanyahu would investigate these sexual assault allegations from the UN, from Israeli and foreign human rights groups, from journalists, rather than just denounce them, and I likewise suggest that if he thinks there's nothing to them he should allow Red Cross visits to imprisoned Palestinians.

The UN General Assembly will discuss today a Russian proposal to oppose the renewal of the UN High Commissioner for Human Right's term, proposing instead to extend it by 3 months to the end of the 2026, and possibly also a US proposal to delay the appointment altogether. The High Commissioner for Human Rights is a vital position that should not be used as a political football by states that think they can pick and choose who leads @UN institutions based on whether they are willing to challenge them and hold them accountable. The role of a Human Rights Chief is to speak out against human rights violations, regardless of who commits them, and to stand up for victims and survivors everywhere, without fear of reprisal. That role should not be compromised. At a time when the human rights architecture is being challenged and undermined, and at a time too of much change and reform across the UN, the importance of stability, independence and integrity of the UN human rights pillar cannot be overstated. The credibility of the UN’s human rights system depends on protecting its independence from political pressure, especially when that pressure comes from powerful states. zonebourse.com/actualite-bou…
