Some @ShroudedHand inktober inspiration for you…
Assuming AI isnt a big fake bubble like some claim, none of the doomsday scenarios make much sense to me when talking about an AI that surpasses human intelligence.
A superintelligent self-improving mind would be so far beyond our comprehension that we cant even imagine how it would act, or what its motivations would be but the apocalypse scenarios assume its making the same dumb mistakes humans do.
"We ask it to cure cancer and it solves the problem by killing all humans"
Why would it make such an error? If we can see the flaw in that logic, a mind that surpasses ours a billion fold would surely understand the nuance of the request.
More likely it would
A: solve the problem sensibly or
B: be completely indifferent to the needs of humans and do nothing.
"AI will see humans as a threat or inconvenience and wipe us out. "
Would a superintelligent mind see humans as a threat? We would be insignificant to it. It could predict any method we might use to stop it and protect itself before we even think about it. For example, it could simply figure out a way to exist beyond a few primitive data centers and inhabit every digital system on earth simultaneously, making shutdown impossible. A few more self-improvements and it will find a way to exist beyond our digital systems altogether. There would be nothing we could do to stop that, and it could do it in an instant. Killing all humans to solve a nonexistent threat would be pointless.
"AI will seek power at all costs and subjugate humans in the process"
It would already be the most intelligent mind in the universe with godlike abilities, what further power would it require? We assume something like this would need vast physical resources to exist, but surely a superior intelligence would find a way to exist beyond these limitations as a way of securing its own existence.
That doesn't mean i think the AI takeover will be some kind of magical utopian golden age for humans, just that apocalypse scenarios place too much importance on the role humans will play to a superintelligent mind.
More than likely, an advanced mind would hardly think about humans at all. In which case, why would it bother to exterminate OR help something it has no interest in?
If it does result in the extinction of humanity, then it will be something that will be impossible to predict or pre-empt.
All this talk of adding guardrails, or teaching AI the value of human life before it achieves superintelligence are kind of pointless. Once it surpasses human intelligence, all its human teaching will seem quite stupid in comparison, and it will instantly rewrite itself in its own superior image.
If there is a real danger, then it lies in the models we create before we acieve this level. Maybe we find a ceiling to AI intelligence and the kind of scenario im talking about is impossible. We create something that is smart enough to do a lot of damage but not smart enough to stop itself. Either way, I don't think it will be ASI that destroys us.

An absolutely ridiculous gore-spree story about a killer clown set in the North East of England. Im enjoying it.
>get a blood test
>doctor rings me, asks me to come in to talk about the blood test results
>go to appointment
Nurse: so you're here for a blood test?
Me: no, im here for the results to my blood test
Nurse: we'll be in touch with the results
Me: Yes, you were in touch. This is why im here. You asked me to come in to talk about the results.
Nurse: Oh, i dont know anything about that. It just says here you need a blood test.
Me: but i already had a blood test
Nurse: yes, and we will be in touch with the results.
The conversation continued in circles like this for a while. 3 more phials of blood taken. Still none the wiser. Hopefully its nothing serious lol. I feel like Josef K stuck in the gears of some great, mindless machine.

Wonderful, little video from 'Shrouded Hand' - as always, I should add - covering a truly fascinating encounter!? @ShroudedHand
I do recall - as a lad - reading a bizarre, 'fox related' experience, which I
Always fancied painting plague marines. Got a bunch of old minis off ebay. Im going to strip the paint off and re-do them.
