How do you look after mental health in esports where the grind to perform is the standard?
On 2 December, Réka Burján, @MatthewJWatson, and I from the G2 Performance Lab are speaking at the Mental Health in Esports Conference in Brussels.
Since launching the lab this year, we've been busy behind the scenes, from developing our coaches to how we prepare our players. We've also doubled down on mental health and performance, bringing two more sport psychology experts into G2 to run workshops on mental skills, emotion regulation, and sleep.
In Brussels, we’ll share what we’re learning about player development, coaching and healthier esports environments.
Come join us in Brussels! 🇧🇪

Hello people! 👋
My marketing role was recently made redundant due to company downsizing, so I'm open to new opportunities.
Esports project management, coaching, analysis, and more, plus a background in SEA and social media.
DMs are open, and reposts are hugely appreciated! 🫶

Coaches! 👋
I’m trying to build a better picture of well-being and motivation in esports coaches, including why you're involved, what makes the job harder and what helps
Share your view in this online survey for current and former coaches aged 18+! 🙏🫶

Our journey at @EWC_EN 2026 has come to an end.
2,045 sessions | 50+ teams | 20+ titles
Proud to have supported players, teams and staff throughout the event, and grateful for our incredible team who helped us push the boundaries of esports performance.
More to come!
Six weeks. One question.
Are we building environments that develop people or ones that extract from them?
The writing is at totendthegarden.substack.com
High performance doesn't have to cost people themselves.
The extractive version produces short-term results and long-term damage.
The sustainable version is slower. Less dramatic. Builds things that last.
My goal across all of this:
Make space for the next generation. In esports, in football, in organisations.
Different rooms. Same goal.
Girls drop out of football at 13–14.
Not because they lose interest in the game.
Because the environment stopped making space for them.
Not a talent problem. A design problem
Early specialisation research is clear: early diversification predicts longer careers, lower injury, better peak performance.
The coach winning the under-12 league by sidelining weaker players is producing short-term results and long-term damage.
We know this. We keep doing it.
Who coaches young players matters more than we acknowledge.
The coach who tells a 12-year-old she's not fast enough might be the last thing standing between her and a lifelong relationship with sport.
What we say to young players stays.

Please share! Thank you very much!
Two years leading the women's and girls' department.
You can create the team, the slots, the pathway and do everything right on paper.
Girls still won't come if the culture doesn't signal they're genuinely wanted.
Structure is the floor. Belonging gets people through the door.
Esports. Football. L&D.
Different rooms. Same question every time.
What are the conditions that make growth possible here?
Wrong first question in L&D: what content needs to be covered?
Right first question: what does someone need to do differently when they leave?
Then build backward from there.
Content not connected to application almost never transfers.
Periodisation. Tapering. Mental skills training.
Standard in elite sport. Barely exists in L&D.
What does periodisation look like applied to a learning curriculum?
I think the crossover is more useful than either field realises.
Kirkpatrick's four levels of training evaluation: reaction, learning, behaviour, results.
Most organisations measure level 1. Occasionally level 4.
Levels 2 and 3 (did anyone actually learn?, did behaviour change?) almost never.
Same outcome bias. Different industry.

Hey guys. I recently graduated with my psychology degree, and now figuring out the next step.
I’m interested in coaching CS2/VALORANT and combining my competitive experience with my Psychology degree to work in player development, performance, communication, and mental skills.
I’m also exploring graduate-level programs where I could continue developing my psychology/behavioural knowledge while staying involved in esports.
If you’re a coach, esports organization, or university/college program interested in chatting about potential coaching, player-development, or graduate-study opportunities, I’d love to connect.
