🚨The Department of Justice has charged 12 individuals with fraud after an investigation uncovered that more than $10 million intended to assist low-income families with childcare was instead funneled to daycare providers that allegedly submitted false records for services they did not provide.
All 12 defendants have been arrested and are either naturalized U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents originally from Syria, Somalia, Sudan, Afghanistan and Iraq. The money can be traced back to the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services, which provides federal funding to California to help low-income families afford childcare.
The defendants allegedly submitted false attendance records claiming they provided childcare services when they did not. The defendants are Fosiya Mohamoud (Somalia), Abdulrahman Alawad (Syria), Zetun Abdi (Somalia), Ikramullah Mohmmand (Afghanistan), Khetam Haouash (Syria), Khatera Hashimi (Afghanistan), Mariam Khamis (Sudan), Mohamad Alawad (Syria), Mazin Alawad (Syria), Turkiya Alawad (Syria), Zaryab Daudzai (Afghanistan) and Cezar Yaqoob (Iraq).

Federal prosecutors announced that Manojkumar N.
Desai, 44, of Ocala, has been indicted on a federal conspiracy charge following an investigation into an alleged financial fraud scheme involving government impersonation, bank withdrawals and gold coins.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the alleged scheme operated between April and June 2026.
Investigators allege that a conspirator contacted a victim by telephone while pretending to be an agent of the U.S. Treasury Department.
The victim was falsely told their identity had been stolen and that they needed to protect their money.

The conspirators allegedly instructed the victim to:
Withdraw money from bank accounts.
Transfer money to another individual.
Purchase gold coins.
Hand over cash and gold coins to someone posing as a government officer for safekeeping.
According to federal prosecutors:
May 21, 2026: Desai allegedly met the victim while impersonating an officer and collected the gold coins.
He then reportedly directed another person to sell some of the gold, resulting in $12,873 being deposited into a joint bank account.
The following week, Desai allegedly wired $10,000 to another conspirator.
In June 2026, authorities seized $55,970 in cash from Desai's residence.
