According to twitter:
- Rails is dead, fat and slow
- Next js is the future, fast and efficient
According to my laptop dev env:
- rails api - 255mb ram
- next js frontend - 2.6gb ram

When I use cursor compose or claude code, I spend way less time coding and more time doing code review and QA.
Which... kind of sucks?
More efficient but also less fun. Reminds me of my time as a team lead.

Solid Cache + Solid Queue have both been set as defaults for Rails 8. Excellent out-of-the-box ergonomics. We're looking sharp for a beta release by Rails World. Finishing touches on Kamal 2. The deployment story in Rails 8 is going to be oh-so-sweet. No paid PaaS required!

This is called an Aqua Scooter.
My dad bought it for me in the 90's as we loved collecting unique vehicles.
This one's particularly cool.
Basically its a small gas engine that floats and can pull you in the water at 5 MPH.
Bernd Böttger invented it in the 60's in communist Germany.
He built the prototype to pull him 24 miles in the Baltic Sea from East Germany to West Germany.
He was caught during his first attempt and got a few months in jail.
His 2nd attempt worked. This little thing pulled him for 5 hours and he escaped.
A German company heard about the story and helped him turn his prototype into a real product people could buy.
I think that was in the early 70's and the design of the one I got in the 90's is basically the same.
The pic on the left is my aqua scooter. Still have it, still works.
I think my dad paid like $400 for it back then. I rode it in the Mississippi River a ton as a kid (i know, kinda gross).
I've never seen another one before. Not even sure if you can buy parts. The company doesn't have a website.
Anyway, thought you nerds would enjoy it.

i've come to the conclusion that i need to release more things, so i'll try to start up the old "free browser game" workflow again :)
ever since qomp i've been too reticent to release stuff for free, but i feel like it's exactly this wasteful work that leads to cool stuff :))

I have been dragged into two court cases where the FTC sued Meta over acquiring tiny VR companies, but I didn’t realize the breadth of the issue — big tech has significantly ramped down acquisitions across the board, which is bad for startups.
Founders have been pushed away from IPOs for a long time, and now acquisition exits are being curtailed.
The ideological position is that the FTC wants startups to stay independent and compete with the existing big tech companies, but an awful lot of tech dynamism is due to half-decade pushes that end in acquisitions.

While she’s smoking is quite a flex. It’s not perfect but I’m surprised how good it is.

The if-then-else monster. Bloated functions that take dozens of kwargs. When you read the code you can't even tell what runs because the cross-product of all the configurations is beyond human comprehension. Majority of the paths are deprecated, unsupported, or unadvisable.

After working with LLMs for 2 years, I’ve noticed that humans have very different short-term context windows too.
Humans with small-to-mid sized context windows develop deep “breakdown” strategies early in life to deal with virtually everything. Ways of breaking down complex problems into smaller steps that can be chained. Their brains contain an enormous recipe book of these multistep breakdown strategies.
Humans with very large context windows operate off raw intuition for a lot of life. They did not develop many of these multi-step prompting strategies as a child, and the idea of “processifying” work or breaking it down into smaller steps is *extremely* puzzling—feeling like it will only slow them down and confuse things.
Both types of people have their strengths and weaknesses, neither is “better”.
But man, we do not understand eachother, and how different our ways of interacting with the world are.

3 months ago: Staged an onigiri launch at a SF 7-Eleven with homemade packaging and it went viral. People love 7-11 onigiri, but they didn't exist in continental US
This week: 7-11 is opening up Japanese food plants in the US w/ *bulk rice capabilities*
IT'S HAPPENING!!! 🍙🫶
Replying to @djbaskin
I love this initiative to make onigiri more widely available! These were $2.89 at the 221 Sansome 7-Eleven (I think a promo deal?). We have a serious lack of affordable and healthy snack options in America, so this is big news for improved quality of life
