By charging all road users, the shift away from a petrol tax could help fund safer roads and lower pollution. NZ should embrace the opportunity to be innovative. @SimonKingham @UCNZ theconversation.com/road-use…

in what will be remembered as an innovative and possibly foolhardy move, I have tried to include numbers and even a graph in this piece of commentary about local government rates thespinoff.co.nz/politics/10…

ALT The primary culprit for Wellington’s rates rise is less wasteful spending and more a long-shirked repair bill. Politicians put off investment in Wellington’s pipe network for decades, until eventually it started alternating between leaking and spraying human excrement on passersby. Thanks to her tightwad predecessors, the current mayor Tory Whanau has had to spend tens of millions of dollars to stop the citizens of our nation’s capital being drowned in a huge poonami.

Encouraging walking, cycling and public transport use requires a cohesive, collaborative approach by all involved. The latest University of Canterbury travel survey shows how effective it can be. @SimonKingham @UCNZ theconversation.com/getting-…
The NZ Minister of Transport has called the Prince Michael International Road Safety Award a 'woke' award. He continues to ignore the evidence, and now insults the global road safety community, and the Royal Family. Oh dear.

I know it’s impolite to share paywalled articles but this one from the masterful @simonbwilson is an absolutely brutal takedown of John Key’s support for Trump.

Thoughtful and worth a read for anyone interested in the Fast Track legislation and Christchurch's urban planning
A planning framework developed with so much foresight nearly 25 years ago has stood Greater ChCh in good stead – until now, with the fast-track legislation. My @NewsroomNZ column asks why the government wants a small rural village to become a town newsroom.co.nz/2024/10/09/ho…
