Farm vehicles can cost £5000/year in fuel but few are very far from the socket. How about solar panels and the use of the new Ford truck. The truck can also be used to store electricity for later use. It is already common to use PV to remove the bulk of the daytime load.
Given one of the few current positives is low unemployment, isn't this a time to raise the minimum wage and raise the tax threshold if necessary topping up shortfall from increased inheritance tax or on higher earners?
On 10 Dec 1948, the UN adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. On 5 May 1949, the Council of Europe was created in London, to ensure the universal and effective recognition and application of the rights. Now 46 members. Just saying
GHG in agriculture it is complicated. Ask:
Are the GWPs based on AR4 or AR5?
How is GWP* dealt with?
Are the calculations UK specific Tier 3?
Are the Tier two calculations simplified with constants instead of variables?
Do the carbon calculations recognise change is finite?
I have never met a farmer that didn't do their best to maintain their land asset in full health. Is the term "regenerative farming" in the UK used to justify reducing input while increasing profit by maximising subsidy and lettings income?
Australian trade terms without the TRQs on products such as lamb - oops a double whammy. There will be a FTA...eventually.
US election result in - Putin won. Best hope is no fighting on the street and democracy remains intact.
UK:EU Australia but without the TRQs? And potentially a dispute on the TRQ division too. It all seems very odd but it was always likely to go to the wire and we are not there yet.
WTO allows us to ban import of unsafe food - genetic modification, chlorinated chicken and hormone treated beef is safe. WTO does not safeguard environmental and welfare standards. Are our standards always higher or just different? Waiting reincarnation as a chicken to discover.
Computers are no longer dispassionate. Algorithms using AI can in some circumstances emphasise bias learnt from the training data. If people are biased so too are computers. Could this be a factor in the recent debacles?
Has British Sugar taken advantage of the NFU? Views appreciated. The new contract terms base the bonus on the EU euro price for sugar while the proposed tariffs may raise UK prices at the expense of the EU price (if there is no deal) #farming
Why is Natural England obsessed with the income foregone calculation for ELMs? Reclassification as amber box rather than green box leaves a lot of headroom. Current payments are estimated superficially without recognition of risk or scale so lots of scope to adjust anyway.
I started a project to link 1000s of pairs of data points in multiple GPS/GIS layers to construct frequency curves. 2 or more treatments and underlying variation should produce statistical significance test precision ag. ideas. Must find time to complete. Anyone interested?
Yet again it has been argued that the agronomic objective is an even crop. Surely the optimum is the point where marginal cost = marginal gain. Thus the optimum could be 6t/ha or 16t/ha in different parts of the field and the crop is far from even. Evidence anyone? #agronomy
Government has awarded £2m to REACT-FIRST (Deep Branch Biotechnology) to produce protein from waste CO2 and H2. The H2 is produced by electrolysis of water. Hmm. Fertiliser manufacture more efficiently splits natural gas into CO2 and H2. Something wrong here? #yara
Antibiotics resistance is one of our biggest threats. So why doesn't the EU classify coccidiostats in poultry feed as antibiotics while US and Norway does? Should the UK also restrict use? Food quality is too complicated for government or NGOs.
