Britain if we’d spent our oil/gas bonanza and utility privatisation receipts on infrastructure instead of frittering them away on short term tax cuts

This is spot on. The route to power in the modern day (and the past few hundred years really) is economic growth achieved through investment in infrastructure and trade. Conquest is zero sum or more accurately negative sum because you damage and devalue the place you invade

Russia is learning this the hard way. No matter how the war Ukraine ends, they’ll be weaker than they were in 2022. The USA and especially China (who have done REALLY well from integrating into the world economic system) would do well to take note

Well duh nobody grows plants in a shed
I wanted a garden shed. My wife knew that but got me a greenhouse for my birthday. On the one hand, it's lovely. On the other, I didn't want to grow plants in the shed.

Trebling power and increasing top speed by 1.5x while only gaining 50kg in weight is remarkable technological progress. I’m so excited for the new season
Formula E has come a long long way since those mid-race car swaps 😮‍💨 Here's a look at each generation of Formula E 👇

It’s ironic that German High Command’s stubbornness and stupidity resulted in them ending the war in the least favourable terms to Germany possible
Oh dear, Peter. In March 1917 the Kaiser's ally, Emperor Karl of Austria, proposed precisely such a peace settlement: restoration of Belgian sovereignty and Alsace-Lorraine to France. He urged Kaiser Wilhelm to agree. It's called the Sixtus Affair. Rather unfortunate to lecture others on knowing “very little about war or politics” while overlooking one of the most remarkable peace initiatives of the Great War. Like Putin, Wilhelm rejected the approach because Germany's military leadership still believed victory was possible and refused to surrender its territorial gains. A catastrophic miscalculation. Instead of negotiating from strength in 1917, Germany fought on to unconditional military defeat, revolution and the Kaiser's abdication in 1918. The real lesson of 1917 is the folly of confusing the ability to continue a war with the wisdom of doing so.

It’s probably the only way to arrive in Britain that doesn’t make me feel slightly sad when I come home from being abroad. All our air and seaports are just a bit rubbish
Arriving into St Pancras does make you a bit proud. Eurostar train to the underground in about 5 minutes and unlike arriving into many airports the elegant building, bustle of the station and attractive public realm must give a great first impression of Britain.

I just don’t believe the Bank of England is going to hike interest rates four times in the next 12 months. It doesn’t pass the sniff test. Labour market is weak (I’ve never known so many people personally being made redundant), risk of secondary inflation seems low

Putting critical infrastructure in the hands of oligarchs is a serious mistake
russia has run into serious problems with its offensive in Donbas, where its forces have become bogged down. One of the main reasons was that russian logistics had been crippled by Ukrainian drone strikes. This campaign depended heavily on Starlink terminals operating on high-speed Ukrainian drones. russian military command identified this as a critical problem and approached the American side, asking it to restrict the speeds at which Starlink terminals could operate. The argument was simple: there would be little public backlash because the US could still claim that Starlink was operational and that the service was still being provided. The Trump administration agreed to the restrictions, effectively solving a critical battlefield problem for Russia. As a result, russian logistics in Donbas are now safer, and Ukraine has lost an important advantage on the battlefield.

I somehow doubt this station will be playing grime, one of the defining sounds of 21st-century British music. Born out of working-class London, grime is inherently British. But I suspect it won’t fit GB News vision of Britishness because it isn’t white enough.
GB News is launching GB Music Radio, a 24-hour digital station only playing artists from Great Britain and Northern Ireland, on 2 November. Chief revenue officer Ross Sergeant said this "gives advertisers something genuinely new". radiotoday.co.uk/2026/10/gb-…

The Tricolore textbooks did not prepare us for all this shit going off in France. The most exciting thing that ever happened in La Rochelle was Annette falling off her bike or Philippe enjoying a particularly tense game of le badminton down l'auberge de jeunesse.

I regret this tweet, my feed is now endless French rioting and midwit social diffusion bias-fuelled takes on them
People who know more about French politics than me: I’ve seen a lot of people sharing this video saying “that’s handed the election to Le Pen”… has it though? What are the politics of protest in France? Do FN voters never do this? Are they the law and order party?
