Browsing 申報 (1930) I saw this ad. Not my field but it struck me as interesting. A 日本日光 1 Yen coin (1902). 1901 1,256,252 minted 1902 668,782 1903 5,131,096 90%silver/10% copper-similar to other coins in circulation in China in 1930. Why the desire to purchase? Numismatists?

Thought from Charles Ives (b otd 1874): Beauty in music is too often confused with something that lets the ear lie back in an easy chair...Frequently, if a new work is accepted as beautiful on its first hearing, its fundamental quality is one that tends to put the mind to sleep.

This rare, early-1920s cardboard advertising sign from our collection promotes the British Lever Brothers disinfectant soap Lifebuoy in China. But if you look closely, there is something a little odd about the key visual… 🧵👇 1/5

Artistic licence? In this illustration from the Red Guard notebook, Lei Feng appears to be wearing a small badge in the shape of Mao's profile. Such badges were not produced until five years after Lei's untimely death.

Please consider reading the essay I wrote for @asiancha about how I came to translate the 2 Ma stories. It is a new essay composed of material that has not been published anywhere else. You may (or may not) find it interesting. Your feedback is welcome! chajournal.com/2026/09/18/be…
The book contains the 20-chapter story, and 2 essays - a translator's introduction & an exploration of Shanghai as Ma Yongzhen would have known it in the 1870s. Tammy has kindly published 4 chapters that give you a flavour of the book plus a short essay about why I translated it.

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the end of China's Cultural Revolution. I want to take this opportunity to tease my research project, “The Pen and the Gun” — coming soon! I worked trough antique materials revealing the insides of the CR’s weapon of choice: art! Stay tuned
