"Ray Nitschke had great study habits and analyzed as much film as Bart Starr. Nitschke used to drive Vince Lombardi crazy during practice because he was able to call out all the offensive plays before the snap. He would run around screaming: "Watch out for the pass; ]Watch out for the draw!" Vince would scream at him to shut up. Ray would just grin, and after a play or two Lombardi would start screaming again. The most amazing thing about Nitschke is that he played his entire career on one leg. Ray Nitschke`s left leg had been injured so much in High School and in College that the muscles had atrophied and never fully regenerated. His left leg was 50% smaller than his right leg." Domenic Gentile. Green Bay Packer's trainer. "Sometimes I thought of Ray Nitschke as more of an opponent than a teammate, he inflicted so much damage in practice. He and Jimmy Taylor just didn’t know what it was like to brother-in-law, to ease up." "Instant Replay" Jerry Kramer. On July 2, 1963 a metal tower on the Packers practice field fell over on top of Ray Nitschke. The tower drove a spike into Nitschke's helmet, but didn't injure him. Lombardi ran over to see what had happened, but when told it had fallen on Ray Nitschke, Lombardi said: "He'll be fine. Get back to work!" Ray Nitschke's helmet with the hole is currently on display in the Packer Hall of Fame in Green Bay. Nitschke and Lombardi.

"Nobody has won thirty games in a season since Denny McLain did in 1968. No other pitcher has drunk as many Pepsi-Colas, broken as many team rules, or played the organ as famously as McLain did. And there has never been another World Series game in which both starting pitchers had won the Cy Young AND the MVP awards that year." Bob Gibson. Denny McLain fielding a Bob Gibson grounder. Game 1, 1968 World Series.

Just to clarify, both of those 75 yarders were broke coverages? P.J. Fleck: Yes, 100% And where where do you see the responsibility for that? Fleck: They're supposed to be a post player. The post player is too far out not getting enough depth. So it's my responsibility to coach him better to make sure that they know the depth of the defense matters more important than the RPO exchange to them. gopherhole.com/boards/thread… #Gophers

RUMORS: The Colts are reportedly shopping QB Daniel Jones. The #Vikings, #Eagles, and #Seahawks are expected to show interest, per @TannerPhifer & @nflrums. DARKHORSE: #Titans may look into Jones as a backup to QB Cam Ward. It's worth noting that Jones has strong ties to the Tennessee & Minnesota staff. #NFLRumors

November 8, 1970 Saints kicker Tom Dempsey kicks what is then the longest field goal in NFL history — 63 yards — to shock the Lions as time expires at a delirious Tulane Stadium in New Orleans, 19-17. Don Criqui calls it for CBS, Al Wester for WWL. Dempsey — who was born without toes on his right foot and without four fingers on his right hand — tops the NFL's previous record of 56 yards set by the Baltimore Colts' Bert Rechichar in 1953.

I also want to address something I've seen on here a lot. I'm not sure KOC ever dubbed himself as the QB whisperer. The media gave him the name. Here's what I do know, ownership and former management has put the Vikings on this QB carousel. This was not done by KOC. I think some people tend to forget the organization has a hierarchy. Many tend to think KOC runs the organization. He doesn't. Does he have input? Sure, but the big decisions are not made entirely by him. If you want to cast blame, start at the top. We've had a QB stability issue long before KOC. Personally, I think he's done a pretty good job winning games with bunch of different players under center. His job is not in jeopardy as much as people think. Do we need to win a playoff game? Sure. But ownership and management play a role here too.

Gophers take on UCLA today, and this matchup takes me back to the 1962 Rose Bowl, when we beat the Bruins 21-3 in Pasadena. Proud to call the @GopherFootball my alma mater. Ski-U-Mah!

After thinking about this for a while, I've come to this conclusion: To at least give themselves a chance this season, the Vikings need another QB option in the building I would trade for Geno Smith. I think they will go after Daniel Jones.

Today in 1994, 45-year-old George Foreman knocks out Michael Moorer to regain the world heavyweight title over 20 years after losing it to Muhammad Ali. My single most joyous moment as a sports fan. I jumped off the couch and knocked over my coffee table.

Interesting 👀 Mike Florio of @ProFootballTalk “heard some rumblings that [Justin] Jefferson was lobbying behind the scenes aggressively for Carson Wentz to keep playing” last year. Wentz then suffered the season ending injury. Did Jefferson lobby this move this past week?

#Vikings QB Carson Wentz says he understands why Justin Jefferson is frustrated about not getting the ball as much as he wants: “Just get him the rock. He's as good as I've been around. ... I want to get him the rock as much as anybody.”

It’s amazing how many Vikings QBs get injured during games without showing any signs of getting injured 😀

Meanwhile, in New York. The Vikings' biggest offseason priority is not a new starting quarterback. It's a new offensive play-caller who will call the offense for that quarterback.
"I absolutely love his playcalling and how he adapts with the flow of the game." J.J. McCarthy talks about how well Matt Nagy's playcalling works for him:

Bills week! Back in ‘75, we went to Buffalo and won 35-13 in the snow. I scored four touchdowns before a snowball from the stands caught me in the eye and knocked me out of the game. One of the most memorable days of my career. SKOL!
