Debt succeeds in delivering a thought-provoking meditation on modern pressures. It taps into a very real anxiety about the cost of “success” and the quiet ways people justify their choices when faced with overwhelming expectations

My forthcoming novel follows a man as he drifts across America. I don’t like to write about places I’ve never been to, so I visited the parts of West Texas I hadn’t yet laid eyes on and brought a fancy camera with me.
My main character is frequently homeless and has to find random places to bed down at night, so I explore those kinds of places.
The need to problematize everything is akin to the religious compulsion to see sin everywhere. I’m not so sure that righteously standing in judgment of the world is always a best practice.
Just finished the God knows which number final line edit of my upcoming novel. The book, I feel confident saying, is damn good. Maybe even damn fucking good. It’s called Away in the Baby’s Breath, and hopefully it’ll be out next fall.

Local mag did a blurb on Picket Fire. I learned long ago that there will always be tiny factual errors in these things. It’s a minor detail, but the McCarthy book that influenced the press’s name is The Crossing, not The Road.
Woke up during my colonoscopy and was fighting a nurse. I’d been having a dream that I was doing jiu jitsu. On the bright side, my colon is clean AND a nurse told me that I do not look 45, so, good morning overall.
Just spent three days driving this path, and it’s nuts to see that I only saw about a quarter of the state.
I just left the most terrifying hotel room I’ve ever been in. Black mold in the bathroom. Blood or shit all over a bed. Some powdered drug on the night stand and weird old diapers in a dresser drawer. Video coming soon.
Terlingua cemetery. Cooling off in the Rio Grande a stone’s throw from Mexico. A great skate ditch in Presidio.
Last night I experienced the greatest dark I’ve ever known in nature. There was cloud cover, and with no ambient light, the world was black. I woke at 2 am to stargaze, lucky most clouds had blown off, then saw more stars than I’ve ever seen before. Big Bend is incredible.
Cruising west Texas, checking out gnarly abandoned buildings (red one had a mattress in it…) and skating the weird ditches on the way to Big Bend.
