“What is a story?” Story is pursuit. Simply put, stories result from characters desiring something that’s out of reach and taking logical steps to get it, ideally in ways that are unexpected and yet inevitable. If the characters don’t want it, they won’t reach for it and you have no story. If the object of desire is already within reach, they won’t face any obstacles in acquiring it and you don’t have a story then either—you only have the premise of a story. Throughout the story, characters will reach out for what they want in different ways and then readjust how they’re striving to obtain it in response to the setbacks they face. Stories aren’t just about action but about desire-infused pursuit. They don’t just include conflict (which holds the seed of tension but must be wedded with desire) for tension to result; they contain struggles that lead toward transformation (either of a character, a relationship, or a situation). If nothing is pursued, your story never begins. So, with each scene, focus not so much on what the character is doingbut on what he’s pursuing.
