One thing people don’t understand about voice actors is… We’re gig to gig. We’re always looking out for our next booking. People might ask ā€œwhy did they take that role?!ā€ Well. This is true for on-camera actors as well. Almost none are set for life off one role.

April 2017 was when Persona 5 released in the US, which then went on to become a cult classic (I voice Morgana) It’s also when Your Name. premiered in the US, which went on to become the highest grossing anime film of all time (a title it held for 3 years). I voiced Sayaka.

That month and year was a major moment in my career. One that hadn’t ever been replicated, and I never thought would happen again. Until possibly this month… Just goes to show that you NEVER know what’s going to happen in your career or life.

For the past few yrs I’ve thought, maybe it’s time to share my 9/11 story. But I never do. I’ve also never gone back to where the Twin Towers were. Too traumatic after being 20 blocks away when it happened. I hate seeing 9/11 coverage bc it never reflects what it was like for me.

I usually stay off social media and don’t look at the news on 9/11. I don’t need to see coverage of an event I experienced first hand and that triggered a decade of anxiety. Sending love to all my fellow NYU students, NYers & the first responders Maybe I’ll share more next yr

No one talks about the mass exodus of people walking blocks and blocks uptown to try to catch a Metro North train out of NYC. I caught the last one before they shut down service. And no one talks about how we all dealt with it afterward in a time when therapy was not mainstream

No one ever talks about what a beautiful day it was. No one mentions everyone on the ground running and screaming. No one talks about how we had to wait in line at pay phones to call our families because we either didn’t have a cell phone or if we did, it literally didn’t work.

A friend posted a story a few years ago titled ā€œRemember the Jumpers,ā€ about how people forgot about all the people jumping out of the top floors. I just scoffed. No one who was there forgot about seeing that. Trust me. What an idiot headline.

RIP to Mike McFarland, a legend in the VO community. I always admired Mike for his support of other voice actors. He was always congratulating them, cheering them on, and genuinely happy to see others succeed. It inspired me to do the same. 1/2

He directed me a few times and was so wonderful to work with. I saw him at conventions and he was always so approachable. I hope his legacy will not just include his incredible body of work, but his overall vibe and approach to being in this industry. RIP my friend šŸ’”

I’ve been appearing at a ton of anime conventions this summer, and these are my observations about the most popular voice actors: 1) They have an incredible work ethic. Some are recording Thurs, taking a red eye to be at the con Fri, then flying Sun to be back in the booth Mon

3) There’s very little ego. ā€œMan, how lucky are we?ā€ one said to me who was on a popular show 20 years ago that continues to draw fans at live events. ā€œI just love the work,ā€ said another over lunch. 99% aren’t walking around demanding special treatment or praise.

4) No one went into voice acting expecting conventions to be a major part of the job. They weren’t a major component or draw when everyone started working in VO. Now… aspiring or new VAs view the industry very differently.
