My doctoral thesis “The Nightmare Realm: trauma, the child and creative practice in fictional dream worlds”. The first part is a novel about a boy who gets lost in a nightmare world. It is dark but just the way a fairy tale is dark. researchers.westernsydney.ed…
I read books by women and books with girl protagonists in the 90s, it was never a thing to reject them, this is an idea jk rowling’s publisher made up. The only thing I avoided were hyper-girly books like The Babysitter’s Club. And it’s because these were too passive.
Publishing is now dominated by women but historically speaking it would have to continue to be for like the equivalent of recorded history to correct the male dominated bias of publishing. I think a bit more balance in contemporary publishing would be good.
People are always trying to cut academia down to size, because being above something prestigious makes you doubly as good without having to do anything. But if they successfully remove the prestige of academia, this ends up being punching down.
I actually like the Star Wars prequels now, but they lacked the perfect balance of elements that the original trilogy had. I mourned the films that the original trilogy already created my imagination and then made peace with the imperfect rendering.
Documentaries are a form of journalism and journalism strives to be objective. You can of course say you never can really reach what you are striving for, but who does? This isn’t a license for overt bias. You don’t just give up on truth. Would Fox Mulder give up?
I started reading the KJV bible a while back. Still a ways to go but I keep seeing people say it’s important background for understanding English literature and so on, and I mean sure but you’re fine with just the Greatest Hits. Most of this is redundant.
Saw someone say they couldn’t get into Dostoyevsky because they were swayed by Nabokov’s opinions. Dostoyevsky and the other “Russian Greats” are assumed knowledge for understanding Nabokov. His work is in dialogue with them, even when he’s critical of them.
Also Nabokov was a pretentious, classist snob who was bigoted against women writers. You don’t have to treat his whims as gospel. I like some of his prose but people are too quick to fall in line with his bullshit.
Psychosis can cause violence but it’s actually fairly rare. Most people don’t know what psychosis is; they only hear the news stories. I’d say something more but like, the knowledge level people have of psychosis is literally absolute zero.
People like this because it presents the outcome as entirely within your control. If only you did this or that. Well what if it isn’t in your control?
People had existing VHS collections which they didn’t suddenly abandon. I bought a secondhand tape of Oliver Stone’s Nixon which I watched repeatedly as late as 2005.
The press used to try to self-regulate in order to stave off government regulation. We should bring that practice back. Peak bodies and alliances and professional codes and so on. I’m sure they exist but nobody believes in them.
