💯
I’ll probably catch some heat for this, but I think it needs to be said. If you’re a healthy, highly regarded high school baseball player with an opportunity to compete at the WWBA World Championship in Jupiter and you voluntarily choose to sit it out, that’s a red flag to me. And for several reasons. Jupiter is one of the few events in amateur baseball where you have some of the best players in the country competing against one another, with college coaches and professional scouts watching every move. This is where evaluations get challenged. Where rankings get tested. Where players can separate themselves from the rest of their class. So why wouldn’t you want to compete? I understand legitimate reasons for not playing. Injuries, workload management, family circumstances, and other situations absolutely warrant consideration. I’m not talking about those players. I’m talking about the healthy players who have the opportunity and simply choose not to show up. From a scouting and evaluation standpoint, that raises questions for me. 1. Competitiveness: Do you genuinely want to compete against the best players in the country, or are you more comfortable protecting your reputation? 2. Confidence: Are you willing to put yourself in situations where you might fail? Baseball is a game built around failure, and how you respond to it tells evaluators a lot. 3. Makeup: When the competition gets better and the environment becomes more demanding, are you someone who embraces that challenge? 4. Development: How can you accurately measure where you stand if you’re unwilling to test yourself against the best? 5. Accountability: Your teammates are showing up, competing, and putting themselves on the line. If you’re healthy and available, why wouldn’t you want to be in that dugout with them? I’ve been on both sides of this game, as a player and now as someone involved in scouting and player development. One thing I’ve learned is that talent gets you noticed, but competitiveness, makeup, and the willingness to challenge yourself are major factors in determining how far you can go. Nobody expects you to dominate every time you step on the field. Scouts understand that. Sometimes you learn more about a player when he struggles against elite competition than when everything is going his way. I’d much rather watch a player compete, struggle, make adjustments, and battle than wonder why he wasn’t willing to participate in the first place. You don’t hurt your evaluation simply because you fail against great competition. But choosing to avoid that competition can leave evaluators with questions you never had to create. Jupiter isn’t the only opportunity to prove yourself, and attendance alone doesn’t determine someone’s future. But when the best players in the country are gathering to compete, I personally put a lot of value on the ones who want to be there. Curious what other college coaches, professional scouts, travel coaches, and players think. Is choosing to sit out Jupiter when you’re healthy and have the opportunity to compete a red flag, or am I putting too much emphasis on it?
