If you stood on Briggate at 8am on a weekday in 1957, and stood there again in 2026, in which year could you reach more of the city in half an hour? Samuel Bancroft has crunched the numbers. Since the 1950s, Leeds has got bigger - but the city has effectively shrunk.

Why can Dijon, France plan, approve, and build a 12 mile tramway in 4 years, while it takes 13 years to build a 1 mile tram extension in Birmingham? Our new report, written with @createstreets, explores how Britain can make building new tramways cheaper and faster. 🧵

This is the first fiboa (github.com/fiboa/) dataset published by someone who wasn't at the original workshop! Thanks @Spiruel for embracing the spec early. @matthmohr added it to @stacindex, see stacindex.org/catalogs/fiboa….
Very happy to talk about field delineation in the latest satellite-image-deep-learning podcast 🌍🛰️ Releasing UKFields and the associated code is all about making it easier to map field boundaries everywhere - making these kind of datasets more easily accessible worldwide!

New and innovative solutions to fixing Britain's economy were encouraged in the @txp_io Progress Prize. My take is neither new or innovative, but something that I believe all future progress in the UK will be built upon. You can find my article on spiruel.github.io/2024/TxP_P…
🚨big news: excited to announce the @txp_io Progress Prize, a £5000 blog prize to reboot UK progress in partnership with @civic_future + @NS_Spotlight, supported by Emergent Ventures, and with a *stellar* judging panel more details below and at txp.fyi

I'm great at writing stuff that I never ever want to publish - so this was a good exercise in finally getting something out there even if it's far from a good piece of writing! It'll be good for me to read back my own words in the years to come.

Great news for those using cloud masking with Sentinel 2 data! 🌥️ I've made a quick app to help compare the existing s2cloudless masking with the new Cloud Score+ ☁️🔍. Happy clear compositing everyone! Check it out here: spiruel.users.earthengine.ap… #EarthEngine🛰️✨

We have now invested more on transport, on research & development, and in institutions in London and South East England for another decade. Far from trying to level up, we have actively deepened economic divides. And it has made almost all of us poorer. tomforth.co.uk/stillnottryin…

Excited to finally share some work I've been doing with @ghgsat over the last few months. This story is a great example of using satellite data to inform industry of the scale of their #methane emissions and ultimately helping to reduce the human impact on climate change 🛰️🌍

.@CopernicusEU has confirmed that July was the hottest month on record. IPCC’s #ClimateReport released in 2021, shows that Earth’s climate has always changed naturally, but both the global extent and rate of recent warming are unusual. ➡️ bit.ly/WGIFAQ

🌋Super excited to share my 2nd paper! 🫧 Could bubble chains facilitate open system degassing in basaltic systems? Answer: it's possible, but more complex experiments are needed! Check out the full paper here (free for the next 50 days): authors.elsevier.com/a/1hYWL…

I made an app to keep track of the North Atlantic SST anomaly that everyone's talking about... spiruel.users.earthengine.ap… It should load a graph similar to the quote tweet - as well as show an anomaly map of the most recent SST observations from @NOAA!
Are you paying attention yet? The North Atlantic SST anomaly on June 8 was 1.04°C above the 1982-2023 mean. For those keeping track, that's 3.56σ, or 1-in-5400.
