Reminder: No method exists for projecting the economic impacts of sports stadiums. What we do know is that no stadium has ever generated enough new tax revenue to pay for itself. There's a reason you have to hire a paid consultant to come of with these numbers: they're bogus.

"If you build it, they will come" ...Well, they built it, but no one came. Your reminder: sports venues do not spur surrounding development.

The guy getting a $1 billion subsidy says a new stadium will boost payroll. Yet, all existing research says it won't. But you don't even need to read an academic paper. Did The Battery allow the Braves to keep Freeman, Swanson, and Fried; or sign any other big-name free agents?
#Rays lead owner Patrick Zalupski on the significant impact new Tampa ballpark will have on team revenue/payroll, and details on the “world class” mixed use development they are “going to absolutely deliver on.” tampabay.com/sports/rays/202…

Wild to see the amount of gloating & online trolling the last 24hrs from Rays bros here. It’s just never a good idea to gloat when you’re still on the 2yd line. Ask St Pete!

Rays totally gonna move to Orlando
Orange County's tourist tax task force declined to advance a proposed $1B set-aside for an MLB ballpark. The task force did advance Florida Citrus Sports' plan for $54M to build a multi-level parking garage at Camping World Stadium. Via @orlandosentinel | ow.ly/c6BW50ZyUCt

Once again, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A FREE STADIUM. If you take $489 million out of the community through taxes, that much less money is available for the government and private citizens to spend on other things. If you don't collect the money, you can spend it elsewhere.

Recent history suggests the team could pay upwards of $850 million, or more, to leave Portland, though the league could reduce the fee.

Tampa councilmember Bill Carlson clearly wants to paint himself as both the defender of the public purse and the guy who'll get credit if a Rays stadium deal gets done. (Or blame! There is always the possibility of blame.) fieldofschemes.com/2026/07/2…

It looks like the Tampa council has no intention of approving their piece of Rays stadium financing. Team owner Patrick Zalupski should be fine so long as Florida can find $180m under the sofa cushions (or in Zalupski's bank accounts, ha ha, just kidding). fieldofschemes.com/2026/07/2…

Ken Hagan is a liar. He knows the economic return is zero, because why else would you pay some unqualified consulting stooge to concoct a phony fiscal impact report? He's been trying to hand over tax dollars to the Rays for his entire career. Elect better people.
