BREAKING NEWS: BELGIUM GOVERNMENT PLANS TO TAKE OVER NUCLEAR REACTORS Energy company Engie and the Belgian government have entered into negotiations regarding the acquisition of all seven of Belgium's nuclear assets. Until an agreement is reached, all dismantling work has been halted, keeping "all options open for the Belgian State." An agreement is expected by October 1st. vrt.be/vrtnws/nl/2026/04/30/…

.@SecretaryWright: “The plan is to take 15 reactors at 8 different locations and uprate them. Meaning the plant behind me would get another 150MW of power output... Significantly more energy, puts downward pressure on rates, allows more manufacturing, more jobs to be created."

The Dept of Energy will provide $17.5 billion in loans that will finance the construction of ten AP1000 reactors in the US. Purchases of long-term components (e.g., reactor vessels) may start late this year. Article link in reply.

SIX Westinghouse AP1000 reactors?! The Nuclear Company just announced Prosperity One, a proposed 6.6 GW nuclear campus in Kentucky! This could become the largest nuclear power site in the U.S. and now THAT is the kind of nuclear ambition I love to see! 🇺🇸⚛️

Anti-nuclear groups in Switzerland have got enough signatures for a national referendum that would keep the ban on new nuclear construction. The referendum would happen in early 2027. Article link in reply. Interesting move given current public attitudes. Recent polling shows that 79% of the Swiss public supports keeping existent reactors running, while 59% support construction of new plants. Switzerland's parliament repealed the country's nuclear construction moratorium that was imposed in 2018. (Link to poll results in a second article.) The anti's timing is bad. This surge in nuclear support is partly due to energy security concerns due to the Iran war. These concerns will not disappear in a few months. Is this a last dash, doomed effort by the antis? Do they think that a fearmongering campaign will be successful in changing public attitudes? I sure hope not.

Nuclear uprates are suddenly having a moment. This week, the U.S. Department of Energy announced a conditional loan commitment of up to $4.2 billion to finance uprates and modernization across Vistra’s nuclear fleet in Pennsylvania and Ohio. The projects are expected to add 433 MW of new nuclear capacity while helping preserve nearly 4 GW of existing generation. It is part of a much broader push. DOE’s UPRISE initiative is targeting 2.5 GW of additional nuclear capacity by 2027 and 5 GW by 2029 through uprates, restarts, license extensions and other improvements to the existing fleet. DOE’s financing arm has more than $289 billion in available loan authority and can finance up to 80% of eligible costs for nuclear uprates. With all this attention and federal financing now flowing toward uprates, it is worth revisiting my Decouple conversation with @jbkrell (James Krellenstein) and @nuclear_robb (W. Robbie Stewart) of @alvaenergyio Energy, one of the companies pursuing this opportunity most aggressively. Alva believes roughly 10 GW of additional capacity could ultimately be unlocked from the existing U.S. nuclear fleet, with individual uprates adding roughly 250–300 MW. The basic proposition is compelling: before waiting a decade to build entirely new reactors, how many gigawatts can we squeeze out of the nuclear plants we already have?

Danke, Niels! Veränderung beginnt mit Menschen, die aktiv werden. Komm zu Nuklearia.

Hell is freezing over. But it is a good thing, and very positive signal from Berlin. I wrote many times how EU's own "renewable target" is disfunctinal. Countries like 🇲🇫 would be obligated to build new gas+renewables to meet the target, increasing CO2 emissions. Crazy. Enter "clean power target" which is the ultimate goal here, which is technologically agnostic and even 🇩🇪 starts to recognize it. "Cat needs to catch the mice. It does not matter if it is black or white." /Deng/ Next: 🇩🇪 realizes that they have spent almost a 1000 bln € replacing one low carbon source with another. But you can't force others in the 🇪🇺 to commit to the same level of self-sabotagge. This is on You: Angela and Schröder. – at Siechnice gmina, Polska

This week alone: - Utility Tennessee Valley Authority was issued a construction permit from the NRC to build a @gvhnuclear BWRX-300 reactor - South Korea is putting $120 billion into 8 new large nuclear reactors to be built in the United States (six Westinghouse AP1000 and two Korean APR1400) - Big DOE push to extend the license of California’s only nuclear plant, Diablo Canyon
DOE is preventing the shutdown of a California nuclear power plant, which supplies ~10% of CA’s electricity⚡️ Keeping it online provides affordable and reliable power and helps prevent what would have been more electricity price increases in the state.

Ireland needs nuclear power for cheaper electricity. @fbirol @IEA when asked how Ireland can bring down electricty prices in the long run? “By increasing the share of renewables as much as possible. I think nuclear power has a role to play too".
