It is that time of the year again when UTME top scorers, announced by JAMB, become the stars of news headlines. We checked the archive to see who topped the charts around 20 years ago.

Yo! I remember mirror in the sun on NTA.
At this age, Joke Silva had already appeared in numerous stage and TV productions, including Pot-Pouri and Mother’s Day. She had also played Lawyer Miriam in Mirror in the Sun, one of Nigeria’s most popular soap operas. Which Joke Silva role lives rent-free in your head?

In 2008, Nigerian lawmakers received salary increases of more than 100%, barely two weeks after public school teachers ended a month-long strike with a 27.5% pay rise. The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) backdated the increase to 2007, citing inflation, economic growth, foreign reserves and the need for a living wage. The last review had been in 2000. Annual basic salaries rose from ₦993,697 to ₦2,484,242.50 for senators, from ₦794,084 to ₦1,985,212.50 for members of the House of Representatives, and from ₦794,085 to ₦1,985,212.50 for state lawmakers. Accommodation allowances rose to between 45% and 200% of annual basic salary, depending on the cost of living in each city. Vehicle maintenance allowances increased from 30% to 75%, entertainment from 10% to 30%, and utilities from 20% to 30%. Other allowances included personal assistants (25%), wardrobe (25%), domestic staff (75%), recess (10%) and newspapers (15%). Constituency allowances ranged from 15% to 250%, depending on the legislative tier. Furniture allowance stood at 300% of annual basic salary, payable once at the start of a tenure. Severance gratuity remained at 300%, while motor vehicle loans stood at 400%, repayable over six years.

In 2005, American evangelist Benny Hinn reportedly declared “$4 million down the drain!” on the final day of a three-day crusade in Nigeria, expressing regret over the programme. ▶️In an interview with Daily Sun, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, head of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), distanced himself from the controversy, saying he had provided the church’s campground for the crusade free of charge. ▶️Adeboye also complained about how Hinn had treated him throughout the three-day event. Hinn had not allowed him to address the congregation, and when he finally acknowledged him publicly on the last day, he reportedly called him on stage and said, “I don’t know your name, but they say your name is Bro. Enoch, come let me pray for you.” ▶️Daily Sun reported that Hinn may have been frustrated by the low turnout, which was affected by a strike by petrol tanker drivers that caused fuel scarcity and disrupted transport. ▶️Hinn also criticised local organisers for charging pastors ₦1,000 each to attend the Ministers’ Conference held as part of the programme. ▶️Bishop Joseph Obembe, the crusade coordinator, said only about $1 million had been spent locally. He also alleged that Hinn’s team took a large share of the offerings back to America, despite an earlier agreement that the money would be used to settle outstanding bills.

In 1997, when Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi visited Nigeria, he arrived with “about a thousand fully armed Libyan soldiers and 400 intelligence operators who came on seven different aircraft.” Weekend Concord reported that his team supervised security arrangements wherever he went and even screened Nigerian journalists in Kano during the opening of the newly built Kofar Mata Mosque. During the visit, Gaddafi reportedly urged Nigerian Muslims to defend their religion at all costs and made derogatory remarks about Christianity. His comments drew criticism from Sunday Mbang, chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), who accused him of inciting a religious crisis. The visit also put General Sani Abacha’s regime on a collision course with the United States, which accused Nigeria of helping Libya defy a United Nations air embargo. According to P.M. News, Libya had been under the embargo since 1992 over its refusal to extradite two suspects wanted by Britain and the United States in connection with the 1988 bombing of a Pan Am aircraft over Lockerbie, Scotland, which killed 270 people. Nigeria argued that Gaddafi’s visit was for a religious purpose and therefore exempt from the embargo. The UN rejected that position, saying even religious visits required prior approval from its Sanctions Committee.
