🚨POINTLESS STAT OF THE DAY #026
Ipswich signed Zian Flemming last night.
Last season he scored 11 Premier League goals for Burnley but assisted absolutely none which puts him FIFTH on the all-time Premier League leaderboard for most career goals without registering a single assist:
🥇 Branko Strupar 15
🥈 Eli Junior Kroupi 13
🥈 Bafétimbi Gomis 13
4️⃣ Jhon Durán 12
5️⃣ Zian Flemming 11
So Flemming starts his Ipswich career just four goals away from the record.
The problem? One successful pass in the penalty area could ruin the entire thing.
Can he reach No.1 before accidentally setting someone up? 👀

Forget the EE's and the OO's
84 LEAGUE PLACES APART! 😳
Fleetwood Town are 18th in League Two.
Arsenal are 2nd in the Premier League.
That’s a staggering 84-place gap between the two clubs in the English league pyramid. 👀
FLEETWOOD WIN ON PENS!
The biggest league-position gap ever between two league clubs in a League Cup tie?
It must be! Can anyone remember a bigger one?

🚨 POINTLESS STAT OF THE DAY #197
Fleetwood Town have something in their name no other English league club appears to have.
Arsenal play Fleetwood Town tonight in the Carabao Cup.
FlEEtwOOd. 👀
Statty himself looked at the form, dropped off to sleep, then woke up with a light-bulb moment:
There are TWO different double-letter pairs in one club name and as far as our research can establish, Fleetwood are unique among English league clubs in having this spelling feature in their name.
A very special club.
Which makes this a whole new experience for Arsenal in English football.
Even more so because they’re playing back at Highbury. 🤪
And that sent us down a rabbit hole.
We investigated Arsenal’s historical record against clubs with TWO different double-letter pairs in their names.
Here’s what we found across those mystery meetings:
Played: 8, Won: 4, Drawn: 3, Lost: 1
Goals scored: 11, Goals conceded: 3
Just ONE defeat in eight games. 👀
They clearly have form against this type of opposition. 🤣
Can you work out which other clubs Arsenal have faced?
We’ve probably forgotten someone, but let’s give this a go.

🚨 POINTLESS FOOTBALL STAT OF THE DAY 198
Max Dowman was just 16 years and 300 days old tonight when he saw red for Arsenal against Fleetwood tonight. 😳
For comparison:
🔴 Max Dowman - 16 years, 300 days
🔴 Wayne Rooney -17 years, 63 days
🔴 Michael Owen - 18 years, 117 days
Rooney was sent off for Everton against Birmingham in December 2002, while Owen saw red for Liverpool against Manchester United in April 1998.
Dowman was 128 days younger than Rooney and 482 days younger than Owen when they were sent off.
Three famous names. Three red cards. And Dowman was younger than both! Some kind of pointless record I think?👀
What do you reckon. Know anyone younger?

For those awaiting the results of the Premier League team with the most league positions the answers are in......
Aston Villa and West Ham United are joint leaders with 15 each. For once it helps to get relegated!
Leeds United deserve a mention too with an impressive 10 different positions in just 16 seasons. 👀
So the inverse challenge now......
Which club has finished in the fewest different positions, despite playing at least 10 Premier League seasons?
Have a guess below! 👇
We’ll reveal the answer tomorrow.

🚨 POINTLESS STAT OF THE DAY #192
Ever wondered how many different league positions your club has finished in since the Premier League began in 1992? 🤔
Liverpool have finished everywhere from 1st to 8th but never lower which means they have the highest lowest position!
Arsenal have managed 9 different positions in 34 seasons.
Manchester United? Also 9. Perhaps a new one this season the way things are going?
But some clubs have had a much wilder ride, finishing all over the table. We've got all the stats and wondered if anyone knew....
Which club has finished in the MOST different Premier League positions since 1992?
Answers on a postcard… or in the comments. 👇
We will reveal the table toppers later on today.

🚨 THE GREAT FOOTBALL POINTLESS PICKLE CRISIS 🥒
We don't do politics in the normal way on here but sometimes important matters have to be dealt with in the right way.....
The Chancellor has announced that tariffs on gherkins are being scrapped in tomorrow's budget and this must be music to many footy fans out there!! Think your pre match burger meal could be a penny cheaper or you may get an extra slice!🤣
It got us thinking in true Statty HQ style about the football clubs who find themselves in a pickle every single week? 😂
Which club gets themselves into the biggest pickle and could most benefit from a cheaper jar of gherkins?
Is it your lot? A rival? Or a club that seems to make a complete pickle of everything?
👇 Nominate your club and tell us WHY.
The best answers will receive the prestigious Statty Gong 🏆, with the winner's name up in lights!
For us it's Man United at the moment. I think they have taken over from Spurs but over to you.....

📅 27 OCTOBER: SPURS & BOURNEMOUTH ARE HAVING A WEEK! 🍒
If this week gets any better for Tottenham and Bournemouth, someone will have to check the calendar.
📈 THE DATE-DAY WIN RATE LEAGUE
🐓 Tottenham Hotspur: 11 wins from 16 games — 68.8%
🍒 AFC Bournemouth: 10 wins from 15 games — 66.7%
Spurs just edge it, but Bournemouth are right on their tail.
And Manchester United? Their 7 wins from 17 matches give them a rather less glamorous 41.2% win rate.
Football really does have a sense of humour sometimes. 😂
😬 NOT EVERYONE LOVES 27 OCTOBER
Wycombe Wanderers have played five times on this date and never won: three draws and two defeats.
Crewe Alexandra have a particularly grim record too: 12 defeats in 20 matches, with 42 goals conceded.
That's an average of 2.1 goals shipped per game. Someone might want to put a few extra defenders on the team bus.
⚽ AND HERE'S THE BIG ONE…
Across English league football, our archive contains 758 matches played on 27 October.
Of those, 89 finished 1–1.
That's 11.7% of all matches, almost one in every nine games ending in exactly the same score-line.
Imagine turning up to 27 October with a 1–1 on your accumulator. You'd have history on your side. Possibly.
Let's see how the league results perform tonight!

THE 41 CLUBS THAT STARTED A BALLON D’OR WINNER’S JOURNEY! 🏆
Harry Kane has won the Ballon d’Or and there’s a lovely little twist for Tottenham fans!
Using the club where each winner began their professional career, we’ve identified 41 different clubs across the 48 winners.
And the newest members are....
TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR! 🤍💙
Spurs become the 41st different club to have a Ballon d’Or winner start their professional career there.
But who tops the list?
🥇 BAYERN MUNICH - 3 WINNERS
Five clubs are next, with two winners each:
🥈 Ajax (Netherlands) - 2
🥈 Dynamo Kyiv (Ukraine) - 2
🥈 Manchester United (England) - 2
🥈 River Plate (Argentina) - 2
🥈 Sporting CP (Portugal) - 2
And the 35 clubs with one winner each are:
Alessandria (Italy)
Angers (France)
Barcelona (Spain)
Borussia Mönchengladbach (Germany)
Cannes (France)
Cruzeiro (Brazil)
Deportivo La Coruña (Spain)
Dinamo Zagreb (Croatia)
Dukla Prague (Czech Republic)
Dynamo Dresden (Germany)
Dynamo Moscow (Russia)
FC Yuri Gagarin (Bulgaria)
Ferencváros (Hungary)

Huddersfield Town (England)
INF Vichy (France)

São Paulo (Brazil)
Scunthorpe United (England)
SKA Odesa (Ukraine)
Škoda Plzeň (Czech Republic)
Sporting Lourenço Marques (Mozambique)
Stoke City (England)
Tottenham Hotspur (England) 🤍
Vejle BK (Denmark)
Vicenza (Italy)
Villarreal (Spain)
Young Survivors (Liberia)
And here’s the really curious bit…
No Real Madrid. No AC Milan.
Two of the biggest names in world football, yet neither appears on our list of clubs where Ballon d’Or winners began their professional careers but Scunthorpe United are there!! 🤣
👇 Which starting club surprises you most? And can you think of a future Ballon d’Or winner who might add another club to this list?

CONGRATS!!!
Harry Kane Ballon d'Or winner wow!
The first ever player to start his senior career at Tottenham Hotspur to go on to win this.
I suspect a record of 125 caps for your country and winning the award for the first time will never be beaten!
🚨 POINTLESS STAT OF THE DAY #194
HARRY KANE: MOST GAMES RECORD BEFORE A BALLON D’OR? 🏆
A few weeks ago we looked at Ballon d’Or winners who had made the FEWEST appearances for their country before winning it.
Remember Omar Sívori? Just FIVE Italy caps before winning in 1961. And he scored EIGHT goals in those five games!
Well, time to flip it around.
IF HARRY KANE WINS THE BALLON D’OR TONIGHT, COULD HE HAVE PLAYED MORE GAMES BEFORE WINNING IT THAN ANY PREVIOUS WINNER?
We're counting domestic appearances PLUS senior international caps, up to the date of each player's first award.
Here are the contenders.
🥇 KARIM BENZEMA - 860
Won in 2022, aged 34, after years at Lyon and Real Madrid. Our working total puts him ahead on combined league appearances and international caps.
🥈 HARRY KANE - 798 (If he wins!)
Harry's domestic appearances (including his loans) and England caps. He's still waiting for his first Ballon d’Or.
🇭🇷 LUKA MODRIĆ - 693
Won in 2018, aged 33, after spells at Dinamo Zagreb, Tottenham and Real Madrid, plus a long international career with Croatia.
🇮🇹 FABIO CANNAVARO - 646
Won in 2006, aged 33, after captaining Italy to World Cup glory.
🧓 STANLEY MATTHEWS - c.640 (unverified)
Won the inaugural Ballon d’Or in 1956, aged 41. A career that just kept going.
So here's the twist.
BENZEMA WOULD HAVE PLAYED THE MOST GAMES OVERALL.
But if Harry wins tonight, his 125 England caps would make him the most-capped international ever to win his first Ballon d’Or at the time of the award. The closest is Canavarro on 105 and Benzema on 97.
DOES HARRY GET IT TONIGHT? 🏆

🚨 POINTLESS FOOTY ALERT 🚨
Forget the Ballon d’Or! 🏆
Tonight, Walsall take on Salford City.
But the real excitement? The scoreboard spells out WAL v SAL.
Two teams. Six letters. A potential once-in-a-lifetime meeting of footballing abbreviations.
Surely this is as close as English football gets to a match where the scoreboard spells out one of the teams playing? 🤔
Statty VAR is investigating. What do you reckon?!

🚨 MONDAY NIGHT POINTLESS FOOTY QUIZ - THE CHALLENGERS! ⚽🤓
The original three-player challenge has taken on a life of its own from last night, so here are some of the trios others threw into the mix that got through STATTY VAR! 👀
👇 CAN YOU CRACK THESE?
⚽ Gary McAllister · Romelu Lukaku · Callum Wilson @as1411777
⚽ Joe Cole · Michael Carrick · Rio Ferdinand @AvgOpp
⚽ Frank Lampard · Peter Crouch · Theo Walcott @as1411777
⚽ Tim Sherwood · Darren Bent · Conor Gallagher @as1411777
⚽ Kevin Nolan · Daniel Sturridge · Nicolas Anelka @alexyoung1910
⚽ Emi Martínez · Willy Caballero · Ainsley Maitland-Niles @darwindisciple
⚽ Alan Shearer · Dwight Yorke · Frank Lampard @preecechrisA
⚽ Peter Odemwingie · Andrei Kanchelskis · Mart Poom @keda1981
The rules remain the same: each player must have played for at least THREE different Premier League clubs.
But what links the three players in each selection?
It could be a stat, a shared teammate, a strange career connection or something so obscure it makes Statty VAR reach for the rulebook! 🧐
Your job is to name their Premier League clubs AND explain the connection.
No spoilers from the people who submitted them, please! 😂
👇 Which trio can you solve? And which is the most obscure?

🚨 SUNDAY NIGHT POINTLESS FOOTY QUIZ! ⚽🤓
Sunday nights can be a bit quiet, so let’s get the football brains working!
THE THREE-PLAYER CHALLENGE 👀
The rules are simple: name THREE players who have each played for at least THREE different Premier League clubs.
The more obscure, the better!
But there’s a twist. Your three players must have something in common to get past STATTY VAR!
They might:
⚽ Play in the same position
🎵 Have names that rhyme
🤝 Have played together at another club
🤔 Or have a connection nobody else would ever think of!
Here’s the clever bit: post just your three players’ names and leave everyone else to work out the connection.
To get it right, they must identify all the players’ Premier League clubs AND explain what links them.
Once someone cracks your trio, it’s their turn to submit three players of their own!
🏁 I’ll kick things off with:
Frank Lampard. Peter Crouch. Michael Owen.
Can you name their Premier League clubs and work out the connection?
👇 Drop your own trio in the replies. Let’s see who can come up with the most obscure combination!

Statty HQ will always do a request if it's sensible and time allows....
Following our daily calendar post @martinrich86 was keen to look a bit deeper into Walsall Salford tonight so we did and it was worth it!! Clearly Martin is looking to hear what we have to say and then place a wager on a different outcome!
With Salford relatively new to league football the stats are limited BUT we did uncover the combined appearances on this day show a sizeable 53% draw rate and Walsall have a shocking 7.7% win rate from 13 games. Just a single 4-1 win against Crewe in 1935.
And yes you guessed it the most likely score-line tonight is...
Wal1Sal1 🤣

🚨 POINTLESS STAT OF THE DAY #193
📅 26 OCTOBER: SHEFFIELD UNITED CUTTING OPPOSITIONS TO PIECES
🔴 LIVERPOOL have won 13 of their 17 league games played on this date , a 76.5% win rate and the best one out of every English side.
⚽ SHEFFIELD UNITED are the day’s goal machines, scoring 49 goals across 19 league matches. Blades fans hope you enjoyed that but there is more!
💥 BIGGEST WIN: Newcastle United 8–0 Notts County in 1901, matched by Arsenal’s 8–0 win over Leicester in 1903. Seems like a regular occurrence in the early 20th century!
🎯 MOST GOALS IN ONE MATCH: Sheffield United 8–3 Manchester City in 1925. Eleven goals. Defending was apparently optional. October doesn't appear to be a good month historically for City!

THE BALLON D'OR WITH A TWIST....
We could have focussed on the important stuff.
France have surprisingly produced the most different Ballon d’Or winners and Germany and Portugal have the most runner-up finishes. We could have discussed this years potential winners. We are all in on Yamal btw. Agree?
BUT we thought we'd do something a lot more pointless........
Ballon d’Or winners who made the FEWEST appearances for their country before winning it?
🥇 OMAR SÍVORI 5
Sívori won the 1961 Ballon d’Or having made just 5 senior appearances for Italy. And it gets even more pointless. Those five appearances produced 8 goals.
🥈 Alfredo Di Stéfano 7
🇪🇸 Spain 1957
🥉 Igor Belanov 11
🇷🇺 USSR 1986
4️⃣ Johan Cruyff 13
🇳🇱 Netherlands 1971
5️⃣ George Best 15
🇬🇧 Northern Ireland 1968
6️⃣ Allan Simonsen 16
🇩🇰 Denmark 1977
7️⃣ Eusébio 21
🇵🇹 Portugal 1965
7️⃣ Luis Suárez 21
🇪🇸 Spain 1960
9️⃣ Oleg Blokhin 29
🇷🇺 USSR 1975
🔟 This is one for you to have a guess at?!
One important bit of pointless housekeeping: we're counting appearances for the country the player represented when winning the Ballon d’Or, up to the award date. So Sívori's earlier 19 appearances for Argentina aren't included!
The Ballon d’Or has been awarded annually since 1956, with the 2020 award cancelled.
