Men with IQ scores above 126 were more than FIVE TIMES as likely to donate to charity as men with IQ scores below 76. They were also more than three times as likely to vote. Participants had taken a cognitive ability test during military enlistment, generally around ages 18–19. The test assessed four areas of intelligence, including logical reasoning, verbal ability, spatial reasoning, and technical comprehension involving physics and chemistry. The study covered over 1.2 million men and approximately 3,000 women. They used a nine-point scoring system corresponding to approximate IQ ranges. Score 1: IQ below 76 Score 5: IQ between 96 and 104 Score 9: IQ above 126 Among men, each standard deviation increase in cognitive ability was associated with a 40% higher likelihood of making a recorded charitable donation and a 31% higher likelihood of voting (p < .001 for both). Researchers even examined 5,786 pairs of twins to account for shared family background. The relationship between intelligence and charitable giving persisted, with a 26% higher likelihood of donating per standard deviation increase in cognitive ability. Income did not appear to explain much of the relationship.
