Ben (@benthUXiastic) is doing some great work to understand and address the barriers to playtesting for indie developers (a subject close to my heart). If you are an indie developer, you can help by sharing your experience in his survey here: umfragen.uni-siegen.de/Indie…

Some great examples in this thread about how important understanding the context of play is for game design. When defining your players, if you’re hoping to impact the game (rather than the marketing) this is essential - gamesuserresearch.com/define…

Good design is really understanding HOW people interact with your game, which may include WHERE they interact with their game. Case in point...

Love @grmcall’s work, and this topic is hugely important for user researchers. Our challenge quickly becomes not “how can we run a study” but “How can we create an environment where running a study matters”, and Graham’s work addresses that topic.
Today's GI Sprint talk focuses on figuring out the vision for your game at the concept stage, and why that's so challenging Organisational psychologist Graham McAllister details why it matters so much, and how developers can overcome the issue gamesindustry.biz/getting-yo…

This was a great opportunity to see first hand how playtesting can inspire iteration - and with a fantastic view!
Playtesting games is essential for gathering valuable feedback on gameplay mechanics, user experience, and player engagement! We organised a playtest day with @Steve_Bromley guiding the process, our #Gamedev learned how to leverage this feedback and iterate on their games.

This critique of AI is spot on, particularly at this point. Whenever you run discovery research, you quickly find that people aren’t idiots, and recognise the difference between “quality” and “stuff mass produced at scale”, and that the difference is important.

It's #MBA logic on meth: find a thing people pay for, then, without bothering to understand why they pay for that thing, find a way to generate something like it at scale and bombard them with it. 38/

“What is our game” is impossible to completely define before you build & learn. Over indexing on upfront planning is doomed to make underwhelming products. A better early focus is to understand your users, so that you can make good decisions when required later in development.

Some more analysis of the IGDA games user research job board postings, covering the last 100 back to July 2023. Breaking down the kinds of companies posting the roles, and how many roles each sector posts. (Sector isn't quite the right word, but I can't think of a better one)

User Research is a poorly understood field in game dev. To get a better grasp of what it is, whether it will cost you a million dollars or not, and how best to use it, we've brought in @Steve_Bromley to talk about the dos and don'ts. #userresearch #ux pod.link/1559448378

Lots of these points are also worth considering when preparing for UX research roles. Thanks for sharing @theastralj
