SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026) Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love. We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we weren’t in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. “But Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to risk—getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?”. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in London’s West End and on Broadway. America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire. His farewell performance in 'Avengers: Doomsday' is yet to be seen. Ian McKellen 29 October 2026 Photo: University of Huddersfield

On February 25 the SEC settled with a private credit adviser over performing loans sold to its own funds at par in spring 2020, without re-deriving their value after the market moved. $900,000 and a censure. The lesson is the process, not the number: "performing" is not a defense. sec.gov/files/litigation/adm…

My family's story: a mill on Hamer Lane in Manchester, lost in the Great Depression. The record disagrees on every noun. Radcliffe, not Manchester. 1920–21, not 1929. A company that outlived the family's stake in it.

The technology was real, the company survived, the family lost everything anyway. The loss wasn't the mill; it was their position in it. In 2026 the argument is whether AI is real and whether the companies survive. Wrong argument. Where are the positions when the cycle turns?

isn't gaming just a waste of time? in 1938, a historian said no: play is older than culture. it's how humans rehearse the world. WorldOS lets you rehearse history. every move ripples. history only happens once. you don't have to. play it free → worldos.cc

On Friday the FCA published its multi-firm review of conflicts of interest in private markets. Read it through one lens: what has to be on the record. Continuation vehicles and cross-fund transactions are treated as elevated conflict-risk events. Independent valuations are expected to support transaction pricing. And the plainest sentence is the one that matters: "Sufficient records should be maintained to show compliance with policies, procedures and regulatory obligations." That is the pattern of 2026. The SEC's examination priorities, the DOL's proposed valuation condition and now this review ask the same thing of a firm: not a better opinion of value, but a record that shows how the number was reached, from what, and by whom. teapaw.org/DealAnalysis/status/21…
Fifty seconds on the read private capital runs on, and what replaces it when the deal changes.

The best pitch openings describe a market about to be forced to change. Private capital is one. Every commitment rests on a read: several hundred pages, read once, reduced to a spreadsheet and a memo. The deal keeps changing. The spreadsheet does not.

The DOL's proposed rule of March 30, 2026 opens 401(k) plans to private assets on one condition: a valuation process that is timely, accurate, conflict-free, and can be shown to a plan fiduciary. And the first read is now free. Any LLM reads the package in a minute.

A read cannot be audited. It can only be done again. You committed on a memo last week. Which clause did the number come from? Full piece on LinkedIn: linkedin.com/pulse/private-c…

To put the £2.8 million Jodrell Bank budget in context, £7.2 million is currently allocated for “bespoke stationery” for MPs.
Government says they “have to cut” the £2.8m budget for this world class telescope. How much did they spend on the PR, branding, consulting, and moving to Number 10 North? Why are we cutting funding to things that make us world leaders in Astrophysics?

Jodrell Bank is the most visible causality of UKRI’s short sighted ‘vision’ for science, but as you’ll see below, there are many other valuable UK facilities and collaborations at risk. We became aware of the problem in the autumn of last year. It is not a result of the overall funding settlement for science after the spending review, which was quite generous I would say in the circumstances. Neither as far as we can tell is it a direct decision by ministers (all of whom have now gone in any case). Rather the problems appears to have been caused by senior management at UKRI focusing on short term economic ‘impact’ (whatever that means) rather than doing their job as custodians of the foundations of science. What must happen now is that the new ministerial team make the time (and space ;-)) to review the upcoming catastrophe, and instruct UKRI to do their job and focus on making Britain the best place in the world to do science, now and in the future.
The announced closure of the UK's largest telescope at Jodrell Bank is only a small part of the cuts in UK physics

This is the result of many bad legacy decisions taken by UKRI hastily and without proper consultation, overseen by a government department that no longer exists. Surely the new @andyburnham government will want to take time to review this.
🚨 NEW: The UK’s largest telescope for studying space is now set to close after the Government pulled its funding It supported various Apollo missions and tracked Soviet rockets in the Cold War

Making Steam games physical again. Love this! Life will find a way @dark1x @Dachsjaeger @oliemack @digitalfoundry
A PC gamer has found a fun way to make Steam games feel like physical cartridges again. Reddit user u/Jibril-sama created a setup using old 2.5-inch SSDs, with each 128GB drive holding one Steam game and a small script. When the SSD is plugged into the PC, it automatically opens Steam and launches that game. The creator bought the used SSDs for around €7 each and uses them to store games that aren’t played often, freeing up space on the main drive. When they want to play a game, they simply plug in the SSD like inserting a game cartridge.
