Many Skilled Worker visa holders sold everything to come here and care for our elderly and vulnerable. They work tirelessly, pay their way, and have no recourse to public funds. Now, after building their lives here on the promise of a five-year route to indefinite leave to remain, they could see that goalpost moved to 15 years. Frankly, it is a disgrace. We should not be treating workers like this. I've been working closely with @UNISONEastern on their Fair Visa campaign opposing the change. And I've now signed Neal Duncan-Jordan MP's parliamentary motion calling on the Government to retain the five-year ILR pathway for all existing Skilled Worker visa holders. These workers deserve fairness, not broken promises.

The extractive state vs the productive state: The real litmus test for any essential public service is simple: who owns it? Social care reform that ducks this question will repeat the mistakes of privatised water, haemorrhaging billions into management consultants, shareholder returns and financial extraction instead of frontline care. The same story is playing out in children’s services. In just two years, care costs have risen by 37% to £3.7 billion. Private equity now dominates much of the sector. Firms buy up children’s homes, strip out costs, drive up prices and extract ever greater profits, while too many children’s needs go unmet. That is the difference between an extractive state and a productive one. One channels public money into financial returns for the 1%. The other invests it in the 99% the service exists to support.
Fascinating to see the debate on social care cover the issue of profiteering. Finally. Our director gave this interview to the BBC 7 years ago. £hundreds of millions leak out of the system each year in profits which should go to the frontline.

I recently joined more than 100 parliamentarians in writing to the Foreign Secretary, urging the Government to stop the so-called "Great Israeli Real Estate Event" from taking place in London. Despite those warnings - and despite serious concerns that allowing the event to proceed could place the UK in breach of its own obligations under international law - the event was allowed to go ahead. That is deeply wrong. An event facilitating the sale of property in Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territory should never have been allowed to take place on UK soil. While ministers claim to oppose illegal settlements, their words mean little if they are unwilling to act when those settlements are being sold in London.

The many takes flying around about John Healey, resignation gossip and national security spending miss a fundamental point. In Finland, where people have a strong social safety net and a real sense of shared national purpose, around 80% say they would be prepared to defend their country. In the UK, that figure is closer to 30%. That should tell us something. Until we change the financial architecture of our economy and bring the essentials of life out of the grip of corporate extraction and into public ownership, we will always be told to choose between bombs and butter. But the reality is we need both. Modern hybrid warfare means every public service is part of our national resilience. Energy, water, housing, health, transport, food security and social care are not separate from defence. They are defence. If we want people to defend the country, we have to build a country people believe is worth defending. A thriving state. A fair economy. A society where everyone feels they have a stake. I spoke about this on Peston on Monday night.

Congratulations to Mayor Mamdani. He inherited a huge budget deficit, brought it down to zero, and still invested in childcare, housing and city infrastructure. When municipal governments stand with working families, not billionaires, there is nothing they cannot accomplish.
When we came into office, we uncovered a $12 billion budget deficit. Today, I’m proud to say we brought it down to zero. We didn’t close the gap on the backs of working people. We closed it while funding parks, libraries, safer streets and making historic investments in public housing. Call it Pothole Politics. Call it Democratic Socialism. It's government that delivers for the people who make this city run. That’s what New Yorkers deserve. And that’s what we will keep fighting for every single day.

I am proud and humbled to have been selected as Labour’s candidate for Makerfield. These proud working-class communities represent the very best values of our country and they deserve so much better. It would be my honour to work for them every day, if elected as their MP, to achieve that. Many people here feel Westminster isn’t working for them and they are right. I am standing to change that and get the voice of these communities heard loud and clear. I am glad that this by-election has finally put the places that make up the Makerfield constituency into the national spotlight. They have been neglected by national politics for too long. It is a good thing that all political parties are now on the hook to tell the voters here what they are going to do for them. More than anything, people need life to be more affordable again. As Mayor, I have brought in changes which are helping, such as the £2 fare cap, free bus travel for our 16-18 year-olds and removing the 9.30am restriction from older and disabled people’s bus passes. But there is only so much I can do from Greater Manchester. If elected, I will have a relentless focus on reducing people’s everyday costs and bills and well as securing the investment these communities need. I have been an elected representative in Greater Manchester for 25 years. Throughout that time, I have fought for the people of the North West of England on so many fronts. I am now ready to bring the whole weight of that experience to fighting for the communities of the Makerfield constituency and would be privileged to be given that opportunity.

I’m pleased at the announcement this evening that Andy Burnham is planning to return to Parliament. It’s good news for the Labour Party and the country. Andy shouldn’t have been blocked from Gorton & Denton. And he shouldn’t be blocked now. My statement ⬇️

.@ZohranKMamdani’s line is a near-perfect mirror-image rebuttal to Thatcher’s “there is no such thing as society”. It’s hardly surprising the right-wing headbangers are in meltdown. We’re all inextricably linked & it makes total sense he’d champion the “warmth of collectivism”.

Donald Trump’s bombing of Venezuela is an illegal attack on a sovereign nation. It is a blatant grab for Venezuelan oil, risking the lives of innocent civilians. All of us who care about international law must condemn this.

Crystal Palace in 2025: won the FA Cup, won the Community Shield, sold a player for £60m, embarked on a European tour, unbeaten in 4 games against Liverpool (won PL/League Cup, won CS shootout, draw PL), won at Villa Park, Spurs, Old Trafford, won at the Cottage 3x (2x PL, 1x FA Cup) and now in the top 4 of the Premier League. Players know their roles well, execute them well. Oliver Glasner continues to perform wonders. 🦅#CPFC #FULCRY
