This is a sad week for Europe, but this is not the end of our story. 🇬🇧🇪🇺
As our former MEP @AlynSmith once said: "I am not asking you to solve our domestic discussions. I am asking you to leave a light on so we can find our way home"
We will 💚🕯️

Massive act of self-harm. And it's not as if it was unexpected. Brexit guru Patrick Minford predicted that Brexit would cause the death of the UK's car industry.
I find it amazing that the UK, an island off mainland europe, managed to build up car manufacturing to the point where it rivalled Germany in 2016.
That was pretty good going for the UK.
Then the Brexit vote hit and killed it.
The decline of the British car industry came in two Brexit stages.
1. Uncertainty post-referendum weakened the industry
2. Trade arrangements that replaced EU membership did lasting damage.

It would appear the UK is still unwilling to bend in negotiations for a youth mobility scheme.
Another delay looks likely while we quibble over numbers.

Given Trump’s latest tilt to supporting Russian dictator Putin in his failing war of aggression against Ukraine, we Europeans must step up to the plate. UK, France and Germany can’t allow Moscow to prevail. It would be the death knell of our peace and security for a generation.

Yeh, @BorisJohnson and the leave campaigne promised central Gov would match EU projects local area funding, yet another promise that was complete load of lies.
Now everything in local communities being closed down or starved of funding.

The EU provided funding for thousands of projects around Glasgow during the last years of membership from 2018–2021

491 days alone on the frontline. He amputated his own leg with a knife to survive. And when all hope seemed lost, a drone came to bring him home.
This is the extraordinary story of Ukrainian soldier Kostiantyn Vlasenko.
Imagine a concrete drainage pipe in almost-occupied territory. Two soldiers inside. Then there is only one left. Without legs. With no hope that anyone will come for him. And so it goes, month after month.
Kostiantyn Vlasenko, from Kryvyi Rih, volunteered to fight. He had to beg for a long time just to be called up.
He was assigned to a position known as “Vertun” — a concrete drainage pipe converted into a shelter.
He and his comrade held it for months. Until one day, his comrade was killed — on his 50th birthday, February 16.
Kostiantyn was left alone.
The enemy knew he was there. They dropped a speaker playing a recording telling him to surrender. His own side would never save him, they said. A white drone would come for him and take him home.
Kostiantyn answered over the radio: “russian warship, go fuck yourself.” And stayed at his position.
Then came the explosive drops from enemy drones. His left leg was badly injured, and he twisted his right.
His legs began to die. The flesh on his left foot rotted away on its own. He amputated his right foot himself — with a knife, resting it on a brick.
“Tears were running down my face. It had to be cut off. So I cut it off,” he recalled.
Later, he joked to his commander: “Congratulate me — I no longer have flat feet or size 44 shoes.”
When the weather warmed up, he crawled to where his legs had been left behind. There, he saw orange-and-black butterflies swarming around them.
“I thought: God, butterflies have come out of my legs, too.”
It sounds like something out of a Stephen King novel. And that is no metaphor. His wife had sent him King's The Outsider in a care package. The book helped keep him going, along with thoughts of his daughter, Khrystyna.
Then came the rescue.
A drone flew in to bring Kostiantyn home alive.
The pilot dropped instructions. The drone landed and shut down its engines. Kostiantyn clipped himself on with a carabiner, gave the camera an OK sign and a heart, and took off.
As they flew over a river, he feared only one thing: that they would be shot down and he would fall into the water. He couldn't swim.
Other drones provided cover. The enemy shot one of them down.
But Kostiantyn made it.
491 days at his position.
Both legs lost.
A drone sent to bring him home alive.
And a man who still doesn't consider himself a hero. He says: “I don't like being first. I'd rather be second.”
He is alive. He is back on solid ground.
His heroism and his story will live on forever.
An absolutely incredible rescue story!
For the first time in history, a wounded Ukrainian soldier has been evacuated from the frontline by an aerial drone.
Enemy drones overhead. Mined terrain. No safe way out.
Warriors of Ukraine’s 92nd Assault Brigade modified a heavy hexacopter to rescue their comrade.
When a ground evacuation was impossible, Ukrainian ingenuity made the impossible possible.
Glory to Ukraine’s Defenders!

People get sovereignty wrong.
The UK was sovereign when it entered the EU, sovereign when it left & sovereign all the way through its membership, being free to leave at any time. We agreed to be governed by laws made in Brussels within the EU’s areas of competence. We were more sovereign (if that is theoretically possible) than Scotland is within the UK (admittedly, some argue Scotland could unilaterally leave).
In any case, the UK is so fractured & badly governed I don’t see the great attraction in making our own laws anyway. Europeans are not monsters or aliens from outer space, just civilised people who want what we want but are in many cases better at getting it. Per capita incomes in the Netherlands, for example, are a third higher than those in the UK & it shows.
Many European visitors to the UK feel as though they have stepped back into the past, so far & so fast have we fallen behind with, among other things, our so-called ‘anglo-saxon model’, which means prosperity for the SE & everywhere else can go hang.
From the sick man of Europe to its laughing stock is but a short journey & a long way back. Sovereignty is for doing beneficial things, not an end in itself.
Sorry for the essay.
Nigel, the two different things we're talking about are independence and sovereignty. Independence is the freedom to act alone; sovereignty is the authority to determine your own destiny. In an interdependent world, that authority is often strengthened, not diminished, by exercising it collectively. The illusion is that acting alone necessarily means being in control.

2036. A clear ambition for Britain's future.
A future where the UK is back at the heart of Europe, with all the opportunities, rights and benefits of EU membership.
It's time to turn that ambition into reality.

This can only come from the Pro EU crowd
The exceptionalism and cherry picking over the youth agreement, Euro and everything else needs to end.

So Brexit as the failure in UK politics continues unabated, and will do until the debate gets real, which can only come from the pro-EU crowd since the antis would plunge the country straight back into no-deal chaos with their ECHR threats.
Change all round needed. Let's see.

Ten years ago today.
In just the last few days: Trump made a deal for the U.S. to buy Russian diesel, an economic lifeline for Putin; he and Elon Musk blamed each other for an order that slowed down Starlink satellite connectivity over Ukraine, hampering the country's defenses during a devastating Russian attack; and Trump waived sanctions on Russia that Congress, led by his late friend Lindsey Graham, had pushed for.
Now, Putin has proposed a summit with Trump and Xi to decide Ukraine’s fate for them, bulldoze a century of international cooperation, and frame Russia as an equal to the U.S. and China.
We’ll see if Putin’s puppet continues to dance on his strings.

I don’t think Europeans fully appreciate what is happening to the European Union right now.
The EU is under an extraordinary, multi-front assault, both from outside and from within. And I struggle to think of another period in its history when so many powerful actors had an interest in weakening it simultaneously.
Russia has spent years waging hybrid warfare against Europe. Weaponised migration, sabotage, cyberattacks, coordinated disinformation campaigns, bot networks and political interference. The objective is clear: undermine trust in democratic institutions, deepen social divisions and weaken European unity.
China has different motivations, primarily economic and geopolitical. A fragmented Europe is easier to pressure, easier to negotiate with individually and less capable of defending its economic interests.
And then there is the United States. Perhaps the most disturbing development of all.
Under Trump and MAGA, a country that helped rebuild the old continent and then spent decades supporting European integration now has an administration openly hostile to much of what the EU represents. Its own National Security Strategy even calls for cultivating resistance to Europe’s current political direction.
Think about that for a moment.
Meanwhile, within Europe, parts of the far right and far left amplify these divisions, whether through ideological alignment, political opportunism or outright sympathy for authoritarian regimes.
This doesn’t mean Russia, China and MAGA are all following some jointly coordinated master plan. They don’t have to. Their interests increasingly overlap, and Europe’s internal divisions make their work considerably easier.
What makes this particularly alarming is what is actually at stake.
For all its flaws, the EU remains one of the world’s most consequential projects built around liberal democracy, the rule of law, individual freedoms and cooperation between nations.
At a time when authoritarianism is gaining ground and even longstanding democracies are showing disturbing tendencies, that matters enormously.
Europe is far from perfect. Its bureaucracy, indecision and inability to act decisively are real problems. But the answer cannot be to retreat into 27 competing nation-states, each too small to meaningfully influence a world increasingly dominated by continental powers.
Quite the opposite.
Europe needs deeper integration, stronger common institutions, genuine strategic autonomy and the political courage to defend its interests and values.
Because fragmentation is precisely what so many external actors want.
And perhaps that’s the central irony of our time: people are being deliberately manipulated into believing that the reverse is true — that national identity and sovereignty can only be protected by weakening European cooperation. In reality, a divided Europe is less sovereign, less secure and far easier for outside powers to pressure. Therefore the very thing that will make Europe stronger is the thing its adversaries are working hardest to prevent.
A united Europe is a geopolitical power. A divided Europe is a collection of countries waiting to be played against one another.

These are also the consequences of Trump’s decision to stop intelligence sharing with Ukraine and Musk’s sabotage.
This means Ukraine no longer receive warnings when missiles are about to hit Ukrainian cities, leaving them unable to intercept the missiles or evacuate civilians.
England will not be joining the EU for decades.
If England is willing to accept FoM then the UK will be herded into this EEA 3rd pillar agreement, similar to the Swiss agreement.
There is too much exceptionalism in England for it to be trusted with a vote in the EEA or EU.
Today, Andorra 🇦🇩 and San Marino 🇸🇲 officially sign the Association Agreement with the EU.
Gaining access to the EU Single Market will create new opportunities for people, trade, and economic stability.
