A headline reads "STATEMENT OF SOLIDARITY BY STUDENTS OF THE DFFB" A subheader reads: "THIS STATEMENT IS SUPPORTED BY THE STUDENT COUNCIL OF DFFB" Underneath this there is a quote "Dialogue cannot occur between those who want to name the world and those who do not wish this naming - between those who deny others the right to speak their word and those whose right to speak has been denied them. Those who have been denied their primordial right to speak their word must first reclaim this right and prevent the continuation of this dehumanizing aggression." - Paulo Freire, Pedagogy of the Oppressed

ALT White background with black text that reads: "We, a group of students from the Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie Berlin (DFFB) stand in solidarity with students protesting the genocide in Palestine and Germany's active complicity in carrying it out. Furthermore, we condemn the German state, media and police's vilification of these students, and the violence they are constantly met with. Police raids on university campuses and physical attacks targeting students are unacceptable and a gross violation of our rights. KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF OUR CAMPUSES!"

ALT White background with black text that reads" We want to reiterate that civil disobedience is a legitimate form of protest. The occupation of university buildings and sit-ins by students are justified reactions in the face of the suppression of any and all open dialogue and public debate. State institutions do not have the unilateral right to set the terms of what "dialogue" should look like. Especially in protected spaces like universities, which should be devoted to the praxis of freedom of thought, speech, expression and resistance. UNIVERSITIES BELONG TO THE STUDENTS!"

ALT White background with black text that reads: "It has become our reality: fear is spread as a mechanism of repression, and the German state wields terror against those who dare name these horrors. The police raiding and eviction of the Jabalia Institute, demanded by Berlin mayor Kai Wegner perfectly proves a threatening lack of commitment to the autonomy and sanctity of educational institutions in Germany under the guise of law and order. How dare you demand 'civility' while funding and enabling a genocide?"

ALT Grey background of the Humboldt forum with a leaf pattern border, white text that reads: "After the events on the 14th - on which a visitor was asked to leave the premises of the Humboldt Forum because their tote bag had a print of a watermelon and the patterns of a kuffiyeh - students and activists entered the space this Monday to gather and reflect on this incident. The Forum has been attempting for a long time to sell itself as a post-colonial institution (we hear the discrepancies already). The ironic puritanism showcased by the security personnel that day, and the current silencing and criminalisation of Palestinan and pro-Palestinan voices were the reason we decided to converge there to exchange and share our thoughts on the persisting racism and coloniality of German institutions. We gathered in the Mechanische Schnecke in the main foyer - built specifically for exchange and artistic intervention - to share poetry and conduct an open discussion."

ALT Grey background of the Humboldt forum with a leaf pattern border, white text that reads: "The Watermelon-Ban was an 'unfortunate mistake' by the security personnel, that won't happen again. An apology had been issued to the person affected. - Humboldt Forum Management" Black text reads: "Let's dissect this..."

ALT Grey background of the Humboldt forum with a leaf pattern border, white text that reads: "Anti-Watermelon Policy as a mistake by security personnel? Pinning the blame on individual employees "lack of training" or "nervousness" sidelines the fact that a security team's behavior directly reflect the ideology of the institution. The actions are a direct result of past training, pressure and expectations of superiors leading to a hyperawareness, vigilance and overreactions when it comes to the "middle east conflict"."

ALT Grey background of the Humboldt forum with a leaf pattern border, white text that reads: "Anti-Watermelon Policy would not happen again? The crackdown on symbols related to Palestine proved itself not to be singular, but a pattern. How? They called the police on us - for wearing kuffiyas and hanging a small Palestine flag in the center of the structure (a Ukrainian flag was prominently displayed). Both Police and the Forum assumed that it was a protest - without bothering to ask our intentions, that we gladly shared with the Management once they gave us the chance." Red text that reads: "Wearing a kufiyya does not make you a protestor, nor a criminal."

ALT Grey background of the Humboldt forum with a leaf pattern border, white text that reads: "Addressing structural problems with the affected person? By solving the problem with a private apology, the Humboldt Forum administration did the same as when they blamed their security personnel: they portray it as a mistake of individuals, or as an 'isolated incident', rather than an institutional or a structural problem. This also reproduces institutional hypocrisy and double discourse regarding Palestine. Institutions and individuals in power evade saying anything publicly about the genocide, but then give a verbal or private answer to avoid responsibility. This is just another way of keeping the genocide out of the public discourse."

ALT Grey background of the Humboldt forum with a leaf pattern border, red text that reads: "No more performative reactions - Humboldt Forum should engage with racial profiling and discrimination in a meaningful way!" White text reads: "Both incidents - the watermelon ban on Friday, and calling the police on a peaceful gathering of people on Monday - need to be addressed publicly and structurally. Humboldt Forum must question the role they play in Germany's trivialisation of Israel's occupation of the Palestinian and Lebanese territories and the invisibilisation of the ongoing genocide. It is up to those institutions carrying the burden of colonial history to investigate their role in upholding white supremacy and reproducing coloniality. We hope, Humboldt Forum will take the lead in this effort - and use their extensive public resources for meaningful steps addressing anti-Palestinian politics."

ALT A black background with white text that reads: "“On June 14th, I was asked to leave Humboldt Forum because I was wearing a tote bag with Palestinian symbols (watermelon + fishnet design). I was walking through an exhibition about the reactionary history of the building, and a museum attendant asked me to turn around my bag to hide the symbols. At first I did it and then proceeded to put it back on the right side. Immediately, the attendants were surveilling me, and they approached me again asking to hide it. I asked to talk to the security manager. They brought him in, and in the meanwhile I was checking the rules on visitor behavior. None of them mention the way people are dressed. The manager told me it was an unwritten rule and that the watermelon was obviously pro-Palestine. I was told this could upset Israelis. I was offered the choice to put my bag in a locker and stay or leave the building. As it was an « unwritten rule » I asked for a refund, which they completed.

ALT Continuation of previous description, black background with white text that reads: "They acted like it was not a big deal and I was being annoying for not just turning over my bag. I asked them if this museum was a place for free thinking, discussion, critical debate, they answered that it was. They said they would have done the same thing for someone with pro-Israel symbols, which I doubt knowing Germany’s behavior these last months. Whatever people think of these symbols, anyone should be allowed to walk into a cultural institution without having to change the way they are dressed, at least in a democratic country. “
