90 years ago today, Oswald Mosley and his Blackshirts attempted to march through and intimidate a predominantly Jewish area of the East End. Men, women and children, alongside local residents, trade unionists and anti-fascist protesters, came together to defend the community in what became known as the Battle of Cable Street. They taught us an important lesson: communities can resist fascism by joining together. Hate and antisemitism had no place in London then, and it has no place here now.

There's an idea of abolishing the state pension for all babies born from now on, but instead they all get a Junior SIPP with an immediate £5000 injection from the govt, 100% invested. That should create a big compounded pension pot than can then buy an excellent annuity.

Palestinians have been fired at by Israeli soldiers and settlers while trying to begin the olive harvest in the occupied West Bank. Farmers and activists arrived to the annual harvest in the town of Beita and were met with tear gas and moved away from the groves. According to the UN, nearly 2,000 Palestinians have been injured and more than 80 killed by Israeli forces or settlers in the West Bank since the beginning of this year. Israel’s army said it had sent soldiers to the area to disperse a ‘confrontation’ and that no one was injured. Olive season is typically a time of high tension between Palestinian farmers and Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank. #Channel4News #News #WestBank #Palestinians #Israel

The Pension Credit didn’t work Tom, because many poor pensioners didn’t or couldn’t access it. Look at the figures. UK pensions are amongst the worst around. Why not concentrate on that..?! Things can be improved, but not by pretending that UK pensions are too generous!
I listened to Ed Davey on the @BBCr4today this morning, and frankly, I think he missed the point. The idea that we're keeping the triple lock to help millennials is at best for the birds, and at worst downright insulting. I say that as a millennial. The case for the triple lock is a worthy one - stopping pensioner poverty. I want that as much as anyone. But pensioners are now less likely to be in poverty than children or working age adults. We talk about fairness, yet our answer is to give the same increase to every pensioner, treating the one choosing between heating and eating exactly the same as the one with millions in the bank. I can see no moral or fiscal case for above inflation rises for millionaires. That money should go where it's needed most - to everyone in poverty, not just one group. It could help fund free personal care, a policy that would disproportionately benefit older people. Ed is right that we shouldn't pit one generation against another. But intergenerational inequality is already one of the defining injustices of our time, and this would further entrench it. Worse, it gaslights an entire generation into believing it's for our benefit. Telling millennials we're keeping the triple lock to help us in 30 years' time is nonsense. We're on course to be the first generation worse off than our parents. We're locked out of the housing market, paying higher taxes, repaying student loans that never seem to shrink, and putting off having children because of the cost of living. I joined this party because I care about fairness and tackling inequality, and that has to include inequality between generations. This line, and this decision, fails on both counts. Ed needs to think again.

What a tool @OliDugmore is 😡 There’s a reason universal benefits exist and long may they continue, if it’s left to clowns like this there may well be no state pension or NHS by the time he reaches a certain age
Forget “adjusting” the triple lock. Kill it.

UNLAWFUL ARREST On Sunday, police forcefully detained and handcuffed a young man under Section 13 of the Terrorism Act. They stripped him of clothing while dragging him across the floor. He had not committed any crime.

Was a great speech by Andy Burnham but I have to be honest too that the triple lock announcement spoilt it for me. With 2 million pensioners in poverty & pension only 50% of minimum wage it’s not right to prevent older people sharing in growth of economy. theguardian.com/politics/202…
