Foursquare was acquired last month. The outcome was disappointing. It's taken me a while to write this, but I think I'm finally done grieving it. Here are some thoughts on our final years, an effort to honor the team who helped build & maintain FSQ's legacy, and my attempt to finally get some closure. teendrama.substack.com/p/som…

Happy to hear any (polite and reasonable!) suggestions on topics too.

Chris Best, Substack cofounder and CEO, on building a daily habit
From our interview with @chrisbest on @substack, together with @guilleflorvs

@guilleflorvs and I asked @chrisbest how @substack got started.
His answer: one writer, and a lot of manual work.
In the early days, every new publication was created by hand. In Chris's words: "I had to go type it into the database to make the second one and the third one. It was very manual."
Their first writer was China expert Bill Bishop (@niubi), and that single writer proved the idea. While they were in @ycombinator, they opened it up so anybody could get started. By the time we spoke, the platform had crossed five million paid subscriptions.

@substack proves you can find product-market fit with a manual prototype.
@chrisbest built it for one writer. It worked, and that was enough to keep going.
