The West humiliated Russia in the 1990s. This war is the consequence.’
I’ve heard this in every language, from every podium. It is history rewritten backwards.
Recall what actually happened to defeated Russia: no occupation. No reparations. No tribunal. It kept its nuclear arsenal and its UN veto. Its debts were forgiven and refinanced. It was handed IMF billions and a seat at the G8 — a club of democracies admitting a wounded autocracy out of hope.
Now recall an actually humiliated nation: Germany, 1945. Occupied. Partitioned. Cities in ash, leaders hanged, guilt taught to its children by law.
Germany became the most peaceful democracy in Europe. Russia became this.
So spare me the humiliation theory. Russia was not humiliated after the Cold War. It was indulged — and it read every kindness as weakness, every gift as tribute.
The grievance was never mistreatment. The grievance was lost dominion.
Empires do not mourn their wounds. They mourn their slaves.
"Special military operation." Moscow's name for a war planned to take days.
February 2022: Kyiv expected to fall fast.
October 2026: the war nears its fifth year.
In Kremlin language, special means endless.
To everyone who calls Ukraine's drone strikes on Moscow "escalation":
Russia has been striking Kyiv since February 2022.
When drones reach Moscow, it's not escalation. It's the war coming home to the man who sent it.
Who has paid for this war, by country:
Ukraine: its soldiers, its cities, its grid.
Europe: €237bn in aid (Kiel Institute).
America: €115bn, and now a bill for "grief."
Russia: its own soldiers, for land it still can't hold.
Only one of them started it.
Prediction: before the November talks, Moscow asks Washington for one more sanctions waiver. And gets it.

Trump reportedly called Musk, and Ukraine's Starlink speeds came back.
Every army that rents its battlefield internet just learned it can be switched off, and back on, by one phone call.
Verdict: bullish on Europe's sovereign satellite network (IRIS²) and its contractors. Medium conviction.
2022: America bans imports of Russian oil and fuel.
2026: a tanker with 40,000 tonnes of Russian diesel heads for New York.
Four years of sanctions, unwound one tanker at a time.
How Russia gives a security guarantee, in 3 steps:
1. Sign the Budapest Memorandum, 1994.
2. Watch Ukraine give up its nuclear weapons.
3. Invade anyway: 2014, then 2022.
Putin wants peace in its "final form, not as a result of a temporary ceasefire."
He means Ukraine in its final form. Smaller.
24 October 1945: the UN Charter enters into force. Article 2(4): no use of force against any state's territorial integrity.
Russia sits on the Security Council with a veto.
The arsonist holds the keys to the fire station.
2009: Washington "resets" with Moscow, months after Russia invaded Georgia.
2026: Washington delays sanctions and calls Putin a "humanitarian."
The first reset was followed by Crimea. Guess what this one buys.
To everyone who says sanctions relief brings Russia to the table:
Trump delayed new sanctions. Moscow released one prisoner, then said Ukraine's and Europe's peace proposals had little "substance."
Relief bought a gesture. Not a deal.
One night, into 22 October:
Russia → Kyiv: at least 4 dead, dozens injured, 4 children among them.
Russia → a market in Lozova: 2 dead.
Ukraine → the Moscow region: 630 drones, 163 at the capital.
One side hits markets. The other aims at the capital that started the war.
Prediction: this war does not end in 2026, however close Washington says it is.
Putin still says he intends to take the rest of eastern Ukraine.
Screenshot this.
One night: 630 Ukrainian drones at the Moscow region, 163 at the capital itself (Sobyanin).
The war Putin started now has Moscow as a front-line market. Its airports, depots and insurers pay.
Verdict: bearish on the rouble into year-end. Medium conviction.
