Omitted: Nikole Hannah-Jones didn't ask Chancellor Samuels why he sent his oldest child to the prestigious private Browning School in Manhattan for K-5, or how his son's experience differed from her daughter's years in pre-K to 5 at Brooklyn's struggling PS 307.

"After Nikole Hannah-Jones repeatedly asked the chancellor about a systemwide plan, Samuels did not commit to any specific integration policies, nor did he offer a timeline for offering a more detailed plan, repeatedly drawing jeers" from the crowd.

“This is not what we expected from the Mamdani administration. We really thought it would be bolder. We’re not seeing boldness,” said Naveed Hasan, who represents Manhattan parents on the Panel for Educational Policy and a public school dad.

Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels faced a frustrated, impatient crowd Tuesday as he insisted the Mamdani administration is committed to integrating New York City public schools, even as he declined to share a specific plan.
In the auditorium of the Washington Irving Campus near Union Square, Samuels was met with groans from the audience while facing tough questions from New York Times journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones.
The audience was largely filled with students, parents and educators galvanized by Hannah-Jones’ New York Times article making a deeply personal case for integration policies.

Samuels said the DOE has convened "working groups"in five of NYC's 32 local school districts to address a wide range of issues, including integration. The DOE has not said who is serving on them or whether they will issue recommendations.
Samuels cited the need to first tackle the "highly segregated" schools with enrollment below 200 students, mostly Black and Hispanic plus many with disabilities, learning English, and homeless. About 30,000 kids attend these small schools, which offer “fewer advanced courses, fewer extracurriculars, fewer opportunities."
“I don’t think anybody here tonight came to hear platitudes or vague proclamations,” Nikole Hannah-Jones told Chancellor Kamar Samuels. She addressed the man who was the district superintendent overseeing the awful Brooklyn schools that failed her daughter.

A red-light siren call for reform:
My office just completed an analysis of FDNY EMS, showing that average response times have increased by 3 min 50 sec for life-threatening medical emergencies and 14 min 49 sec for non-life-threatening emergencies since 2015.
Why are waits getting longer in NYC? Our report points to fewer ambulances in service, growing demand, long hospital turnaround times, traffic—and an EMS workforce struggling with recruitment and retention amid low salaries.
New Yorkers calling 911 in a medical emergency cannot afford to wait longer and longer for help. We need to get more ambulances on the street, strengthen the EMS workforce, and cut the delays that keep crews tied up instead of responding to the next emergency.
Ten months into office, neither @NYCMayor Mamdani nor @DOEChancellor Kamar Samuels has articulated a school integration plan.
Samuels is set to appear with Nikole Hannah-Jones tonight at an "NYC School Integration Town Hall."
Organizers cite "tremendous ticket demand," @lizkimtweets reports.

As the NYC DOE's chief lawyer, Liz Vladeck stopped Chancellor Kamar Samuels from answering questions at a City Council hearing about his involvement in procurement violations when he was a Manhattan superintendent.
"What was your role?" @EricDinowitzNYC asked Samuels about no-bid contracts awarded to a non-DOE vendor.
“We are not going to comment on questions involving law enforcement,” Vladeck interjected, directing Samuels, now under investgation, not to reply.
