This is old news from Assam (2019). Sharing to know how this system works. ---------------- Smugglers on the prowl in Assam jungles in search of juvenile elephants Amidst the hullabaloo over transportation of four elephants to Gujarat, notorious wildlife smugglers are still on the prowl in the Assam jungles to catch juvenile elephants. Though catching elephants in the wild is a criminal offence, and the punishment for the crime is seven years imprisonment and fine of Rs 10,000, the smugglers are unperturbed. According to sources, the smugglers, in connivance with a section of dishonest Assam Forest Department officials, have caught nearly half a dozen juvenile elephants from the wild last winter. A video of a training session for a juvenile elephant caught from the wild is in possession of Northeast Now, and the smugglers were busy teaching the baby elephant the etiquette of captive life. Generally, the elephant smugglers engage tribal people from villages near forests to catch the elephants, and they target mainly juvenile elephants. For every successful catch and training, the villagers get Rs one to two lakhs per elephants, the sources said, adding that the smugglers subsequently sell them at a premium outside the state. Sources said the smugglers have already started negotiations with prospective buyers in the mainland to sell the juvenile elephants which were caught during the last winter season. It has been reported that two of the four elephants which were being sent to Gujarat, were caught from the wild, and were micro-chipped the day of issue of the transport permission by the Assam Forest Department The two elephants in question have been identified as Rupsing and Rani. Though the elephants are about six years old, their names did not feature in the list of 905 captive elephants as on December 30, 2018. The list of 905 captive elephants was submitted to the Ministry of Environment and Forest by former Chief Wildlife Warden of Assam, D.P.Bankhwal. While there is total ban on sale and purchase of elephants, the smugglers are smart enough to prepare documentation of the elephants caught from the jungles, and sell them in the mainland. Arrest of notorious wildlife smuggler Md Mumtaj Siddique of Borhapjan near Doomdooma in Tinsukia district in June 2016 had brought to light several facts about illegal elephant trade from Assam. Md Mumtaj Siddique was arrested for his alleged involvement in forging documents for claiming his ownership over two juvenile elephants. The smuggler had produced birth certificates of the elephants and had the seal and signature of Dr. Kalpa Nath Gogoi, the then Veterinary Assistant Surgeon of Kakopathar. According to reports compiled by the Northeast Now, between 2008 and 2015, a total of 61 elephants were illegally sold outside Assam. Unfortunately, there is no record of the return of the 61 elephants with the Assam Forest Department. And in most cases, the forest officials don’t know the present locations and well being of the elephants. As per the record, in 2009, as many as 15 elephants were sent outside Assam. Similarly, 20 elephants were transported in 2014 from the state. @mrajshekhar @PFCII @CMOTamilnadu nenow.in/environment/smuggle…

The 27-story home of Mukesh Ambani in Mumbai, known as Antilia, stands on the site of a former orphanage. The orphanage was a charitable organization established in 1892, and per its founding charter, its purpose was to care for and educate orphaned and poor boys belonging to the Khoja community, a small trading community in Mumbai. By 2002, the charity owned around an acre of land on Altamount Road, one of the most expensive real estate locations in India. In November that year, the charity sold this acre to a company controlled by Ambani for 21 crore rupees, or about $4.3 million. The real estate value of the plot at the time was no less than 200 crore rupees, or $41 million, according to an Indian publication called The Caravan. The sale price was around a tenth of the value The Caravan reported. There was a problem. The orphanage was a religious charitable trust, and to sell its properties, it was required to seek approval in advance from the state regulatory board for charities. No such request was made to the board. In 2004, the board issued a notice requiring an explanation. The charity fought it for a year before offering a settlement to the board. In 2005, the board agreed to take 16 lakh rupees, about $36,000. Its members voted that the sale of the land had been necessary for the orphanage's mission, and the case was closed. This was the approval that allowed the tower to be built. Ten years later, a state inquiry found that board members had committed misconduct for personal gain. In 2017, the board filed an affidavit in the Bombay High Court stating that the sale was illegal all along. So the board charged with protecting land donated for charitable purposes is the board that handed it over. And for $36,000, it gave up land worth at least $41 million. The land now accounts for most of the house's value. It cost about $77 million to build Antilia, but now it's worth an estimated $1 billion, and nearly all of that value is from the land, not the building. The sale has never been reversed, and the land has never been ordered by a court to be returned to the charity. Land given to raise orphans is now under a $1 billion house, and the only people who were paid to object took $36,000 to stop.

Good from Kerala HC. More oversight is so badly needed (See: thenewsminute.com/news/how-b…). The catch is: Demand for elephants is growing from other states. And so, such audits need to be countrywide + rigorous. Which means we have to wait for the current lot of bureaucrats to leave.
Kerala High Court Orders Statewide Census of Captive Elephants: In response to fresh petitions raising concerns over compliance, tracking, and the physical welfare of captive pachyderms, the Kerala High Court has directed all district collectors to compile and submit a comprehensive, verified statewide record of captive elephants within two weeks. This move aims to tighten local oversight on private and temple-held animals, ensuring that every registered elephant's health logs, microchip data, and physical location are strictly accounted for amid ongoing scrutiny over inter-state movements.

Over the past year or a little more(1-14 months age group), around 45 cubs have been born in Tadoba, about 36 in Kanha, around 34 in Bandhavgarh, about 25 in Panna, roughly 21 in Ratapani, about 18 in Pench, 16 in Ranthambore, and 17 in Sariska. In other words, nearly 200 tiger cubs are currently moving with their mothers across this central Indian landscape. The carrying capacity of these forests remains largely unchanged no meaningful additional forest connectivity has been created, and the reserves themselves have not been expanded. If all these cubs survive to adulthood, they will eventually need secure territories of their own. With high tiger densities and limited safe habitat, many will be forced to disperse into new areas. This is a natural process. However, without proper management and protection of corridors, the survival of these cubs will become an extremely difficult challenge. Even keeping them safe from territorial conflicts in the wild and from poachers is already a major task. This is why the question remains: why is the Central Government still unable to turn strong, functional corridors from paper into reality on the ground corridors that can provide these tigers with safe, undisturbed pathways free from human interference? It is for this reason that I wrote in an article a few days ago that after 2030–2034, the growth in India’s tiger numbers is likely to stabilize. This tiger ecosystem is already very close to its peak, and there is little further room left. In recent times, five tigers have already been killed in railway and road accidents while moving through corridors. This loss is completely unacceptable and deeply concerning. The Central Government must take strong, science-based measures to prevent such accidents. #bigcatpopulation #tigerland #tadobatigerreserve #kanhatigerreserve #penchtigerreserve

AN APPEAL TO THE GOVERNMENT OF INDIA PLEASE PROTECT ANIMALS FROM CRUEL TESTING! Animals feel pain, fear and suffering just like humans. They cannot speak, protest or defend themselves against the agony of laboratory experiments. Their silence should never be mistaken for consent. We humbly appeal to the Government of India to prioritise cruelty-free scientific alternatives and strengthen protections against unnecessary animal testing. Scientific progress and compassion must go hand in hand. These innocent lives deserve dignity, kindness and protection. ā¤ļø #StopAnimalTesting #AnimalWelfare

The subtext here is massive. After the BJP's dilutions of India's Wildlife Protection Act, demand for elephants is rising again -- not just from temples but also churches and mosques. Expect more such transactions and subtractions from wild populations.

Horrifying. This 10-hectare pond in Nerul is home to thousands of migratory flamingos every year. Now, CIDCO wants to build homes there and even puts a cost to it—Rs 3600 crore ā€œlossā€ if it is not developed. How can a city planning authority like @CIDCO_Ltd be so utterly uneducated about the environment?

Forest lands being grabbed, wildlife being exploited, elephants being passed around like political gifts, and animals paying the price for political patronage. And somehow, BJPs shadow keeps appearing in these stories. What exactly is left of this country's conscience? We worship elephants, worship nature, worship gods but protecting the living beings and ecosystems we claim to revere is apparently too much to ask. India, look at what we havee become. The hypocrisy is staggering. @narendramodi @CMOTamilnadu

You moron, LOP is also an incumbent person and he has all his rights to challenge a poorly productive PM for question and answers especially when the PM dont even attend the designated place for debates that is Parliament .
But who exactly are you? Why should an incumbent Prime Minister debate with random individuals? What qualifications do you possess other than being a political dynast?
