So I’m looking for a new job since we’re moving, and what I’m finding is less than ideal. It’s brought up the question: Can I give myself time off of work, that I’ve been doing non stop for the last 20 years ? Do I have the funds to do so? 1/3

The answer is yes. And the only reason I’m in this position is because I’ve been saving and investing for as long as I’ve been training and working. 2/3

Investing can truly open doors & give you options. In a minefield of physician job opportunities, many of which are not structured in your favor, having the ability to choose can be a game changer. Start investing, stay consistent. You never know what life will throw at you 3/3

I hate it when people tell doctors that they HAVE to get a financial advisor. Bro. They went to medical school. I think they can figure out how to invest their money. #doctorswhoinvest

Work. Learn. Earn. The mantra for new residency graduate should have when first starting work. Work every shift. Learn what works for you or doesn’t. Earn & pay off debts while saving & investing. Do this for at least 3 years & then start making changes to suit your lifestyle.

Confession: I made a mid life crisis purchase 🤣 And I paid for it in full. In cash. 🙃 I splurged here after 10 years of working clinically full time as an anesthesiologist.

On top of that: make sure you can afford it. As a new physician in debt or with other responsibilities, consider putting off large for fun things. Wait until you can make the purchase freely, so that it doesn’t feel like a burden or cause you more financial strain.

One of the reasons I decided to splurge (aside from age related crises lol) is because I knew I had the cash to do it, and felt comfortable taking the leap. So, don’t be afraid to treat yourself, but also don’t be afraid to wait and make sure it’s the right purchase for you. 🚘

After many months of taking a break, I think what most doctors need is financial guidance 🧵

Doctors are smart. We are capable of figuring these things out but a little guidance along the way can make a big difference

Personally I’m tired of seeing doctors being targeted for their money. It took us long enough to make some. Now let us keep it and grow it. #doctorfinance #physicianfinance

No one wants a 30 year career anymore. The problem is that as physicians (other professionals also deal with this) we have student loans! And once you start practicing you’re in your 30s with responsibilities and simply pivoting away from clinical medicine isn’t easy.

In line with that: build your financial house. Save, invest, and think about diversifying your income. Earning from different sources means you aren’t reliant on just one! For me, this also means a more interesting work week
