What's something your kid knows that no test has ever asked?

Fourth-grade reading is back where it was in 1992. A federal count found the 2024 average wasn't significantly different from the first test. Thirty-plus years, one pace for every kid. The kids aren't the problem.

Day 2 of building out loud. Grades now speak your language. Homeschool for mastery and the checkpoint says Mastered. Pass/fail family, it says Passed. Grade family, you get a grade. You choose. The app follows.

A parent sent us a photo: a matching game was showing the same pair twice. We went looking and found the same bug hiding in other lessons too. Fixed it once, and now it's fixed everywhere. The best bug reports come from kitchen tables.

When COVID hit, we asked a simple question: why not us? We found out we could do it better. More love, more focus, each kid learning as themselves instead of one of 25. We never went back.

One idea, one paragraph. That's one of the oldest rules in writing, and a kid can learn it in an evening with a pencil. Here's the lesson, and where it comes from.

And typing: since 2011, students taking the national writing test (NAEP) have had to type their answers. Laptops for grades 8 and 12 in 2011, tablets for grades 4 and 8 in 2017.

A week of writing practice can be this small: one paragraph a day, read aloud, plus 15 minutes of typing. That's it. Try it for a week and compare Monday's paragraph with Friday's.
