What does holiness have to do with the wars in Ukraine, Iran, Israel, or the growing divisions in our nation, the church, or your family? That's what this year's Fight Laugh Feast Conference is all about.
14 Days.
When they told churches to stop singing, it stopped feeling like science. #CrossPolitic #ReligiousLiberty

I asked for a question to be added to our alumni survey this year regarding home ownership. I just got the results and was surprised to learn that over 95% of NSA grads who graduated 15 years ago own their homes. And 65% of NSA grads who graduated five years ago own their homes. I don’t know the national averages for these age brackets, but a suspect that these rates are significantly higher.
What does it mean to be a man? It means you have been given a masculine shaped assignment in this world.
What is that masculine shape? What is masculinity/manliness? The Bible teaches that masculinity is God’s gift of strength to be used in obedient sacrifice for the good of others.
The Text: “Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong” (1 Cor. 16:13).
Arguably, Paul intends for all of these characteristics to be understood as elements of masculinity and manhood, but certainly the last one: be strong. “The glory of young men is their strength, And the splendor of old men is their gray head” (Prov. 20:29). John echoes the same idea: “I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one” (1 Jn. 2:14).
Interestingly, Paul’s charge to the Corinthians also echoes the language of the Philistines needing to be roused to battle with the Israelites: “Be strong, and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight” (1 Sam. 4:9). While we wouldn’t ordinarily want to get our theology from Philistines, this underlines the fact that the masculine trait of strength is a creational reality, part of the natural order, and therefore even Philistines recognized it. This text also connects male strength with fighting and warfare. We see this in the biblical descriptions of armies of men when their strength has failed: “The mighty men of Babylon have ceased fighting, they have remained in their strongholds; their might has failed, they became like women…” (Jer. 51:30)...

Scripture is clear: politics is downstream of worship. When nations turn away from the Living God, God gives them over to idolatrous delusions, seeking prosperity and peace in military power, economic prowess, and all manner of humanistic folly. America must return to Christ.
Gabe Rench: The Church and the Moral Decline of America
There is a lot of blame-shifting happening in our culture right now. Everyone has a villain, everyone has a scapegoat: the politicians, the media, the universities, the other party, the other tribe and so forth. What almost no one wants to say out loud is the one thing Scripture keeps insisting on: judgment begins in the house of God (1 Peter 4:17). So before we start blaming the Jews or the Democrats, we need to think clearly about the church’s responsibility for the spiritual state of America.
Here is the big idea: the church’s abdication and unfaithfulness to God is the primary cause of America’s cultural and moral collapse. And if the church would repent, America would get right with the Lord again.
By the time the constitution was ratified in 1789, America was 99% protestant. Catholics and all others made up the other 1%. How could a thoroughly Christian nation end up 250 years later so far away from its founding vision? Included in my operating thesis here is that wherever the church has played a central role in the birth of a nation, like what happened in America, the Christian church will be central to the spiritual success or failure of that nation. Let me put it this way. The church wasn’t a minority subculture pleading for a hearing; it was the water Americans swam in. It held the foothold, the moral centrality, the pulpit of the nation’s conscience. A church with that much cultural authority doesn’t get to disclaim responsibility for what happens after that. To whom much is given, much is required...

Very helpful history. And also helpful Rorschach test revealing the Jew-hate mind virus.
And yes, everyone is quite aware of the Septuagint — which is also helpful, but Protestantism has always been a “back to the sources” movement, provided in this case by a bunch of rabbis.
Without post-70 AD, rabbinic Judaism, the Protestant church does not have a Bible.
First, the manuscript tradition that all of our modern translations are based on is the Masoretic text. The Masoretes were the rabbis that followed after the Tannaim and the Amoraim. They worked from the 7th to the 10thcentury AD and their main focus was the preserving of the Hebrew text of the Old Testament and developing the vowel and accent system that we use today when we read the Hebrew text. Delete the work of the Masoretes and you delete the text that we use for our Old Testament. No rabbis, no Bible.
Second, the Protestant recovery of the ability to read the Old Testament in the original Hebrew language was made possible by relying on the work of late medieval rabbis, primarily the grammarians, along with the assistance of 16thcentury Jews who either were willing to teach Hebrew to their Christian neighbors or who actually converted to the Christian faith themselves and brought their rabbinic knowledge of the Hebrew text with them. For instance, in the early thirteenth century, David Kimhi composed the Miklohl, a basic grammar of the Hebrew language, and the Hashorashim, a Hebrew dictionary. When sixteenth century Christians began returning to the Hebrew language, these texts provided their entrance into Hebrew fluency.
Additionally, the grammarians produced a series of commentaries on the text of the Old Testament, commentaries which developed something very similar to what we now refer to as the historical-grammatical method. These commentaries served as tutors to early protestant exegetes, trying to make their way through the Hebrew text for the first time. For instance, from 1517-1519, the Christian publisher Daniel Bomberg, working in Venice, published what we now refer to as the Bomberg Rabbinic Bible. It contained the Masoretic text of the Old Testament, surrounded by the corresponding Targum (Aramaic translation/interpretation of the Hebrew text), and commentaries by grammarians such as Rashi, Kimhi, Ibn Ezra, etc.
Bomberg’s Rabbinic Bible became an essential tool in the libraries of Reformed exegetes. If you have spent any time in Bucer’s commentary on the Psalms, you know how heavily he relied on Bomberg’s sources for his own understanding of the text. What is harder to notice, but which is equally true, is how much weight Calvin himself gave to these sources. At one point Calvin singles out Kimhi as the best of the Jewish exegetes. This reliance on the assistance of the grammarians permeates the works of sixteenth and seventeenth century, Protestant exegesis. Delete the Rabbis, and you delete the Protestant ability to read and translate the Hebrew text.
This reliance on Jewish sources was not without its pitfalls. The anti-trinitarian controversies that plagued the Reformed church in the 16th century were largely a result of Protestant reliance on Jewish commentaries. For instance, Kimhi’s commentary on the Psalms included critiques of the Christian reading of the messianic Psalms. Some young exegetes were not ready to go up against Kimhi’s work and found themselves succumbing to heterodox views on the deity of Christ, etc.
Nevertheless, the vast majority of the Reformed church figured out how to make good use of Jewish sources without losing their minds. For instance, it is not a coincidence that many of the contributors to the formation of the Reformed political tradition, men like Franciscus Junius and John Selden, were also great Hebraists, steeped deeply in the works of medieval rabbis. They drew from that tradition for much of their work. There were movements to burn all the Jewish sources that rose up at various moments, but these movements were primarily driven by the Papists, not the Reformed, who generally opposed this mania.
To repeat my opening claim - without post-70 AD, rabbinic Judaism, the Protestant church does not have a Bible. The Jews were still wrong about Jesus. But without them, you don’t have Bible.

Ben Zornes: The Garden Kingdom
As Darwin’s theory for the origin of the species took hold in academic circles, and the liberal theologians went along with it–to keep their street cred, no doubt–not only was his view patently false from a scientific perspective, it was also unimaginative. Now, I am not a scientist, nor the son of a scientist, so others are more qualified to speak to the evidentiary proofs for why Darwinian evolution is a tottering Jenga tower of poorly placed propositions. I want to speak to the issue of how damaging Darwin’s view is to our imagination.
We have come to a point where sneezing on a canvas is lauded as brave and visionary art. But no one notices that this arises from the bland, sepia-hued picture which Darwin left us of the origin of man. The readers of this publication are, in large measure, the sort of people who believe the Bible from cover to cover. But take a moment, and picture in your mind what you think of when you think of our first parents. Many Christians doing this exercise would admit that their mental picture is far more akin to a Neanderthal Display at the Smithsonian rather than Lord Celeborn and Lady Galadriel.
Darwin’s proposal for man’s origin is, to put it bluntly, ugly...

Lockean liberalism is closer to the biblical-covenantal foundation of nations than modern secular liberalism but he watered it down. As @d3bach pointed out, the Founders cited Scripture more than any other source, Deuteronomy twice as much as Locke. Covenant > social contract.
Basically a perfect encapsulation of the central problem with the NatCon speeches by Yoram's New Right Americans by @Doranimated, speaking with my friend @GadiTaub1. Excellent explanation. I'd only add that explaining the foreign propaganda forming their message would help too.
