TEXAS IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS, BUT TEXAS IS NOT FOR SALE!
It’s simple! If Data Centers want to come
to Texas they must conserve our water, bring their own power, preserve our agricultural land, and give local Texans a voice.
Published by @MQSullivan for @TexasScorecard:
“If there were a “Texas Ten Commandments,” being a good neighbor would certainly have made the list, if not top it, since at least 1836.
But that tenet is being tested by an unprecedented push to develop data centers across our state.
Today, there are already more than 400 data centers operating or under construction in Texas. Hundreds more have been proposed as part of the AI gold rush.
Out-of-state developers and their financial backers see Texas, our land, water, and power grid, as raw material. But are they being good neighbors? Perhaps an even more important question: have we, as Texans, yet determined what it means to be a “good neighbor” in the age of AI?
What we have learned in our coverage, whatever one thinks of the proliferation of data centers and their impact on the future economy, is that local residents have been cut out of the conversation.
We can shrug and accept a future where Texas communities are treated as collateral in someone else’s AI boom. Or, citizens can insist that Texans, not distant corporations, decide what gets built in our backyards and under what conditions.
None of this is that new; healthy (if sometimes loud) conversations took place in the early days of the very first oil boom. Whether discussing the “black gold” of oil or the “liquid gold” of AI, the similarities are clear: given the chance, Texans have proven their ability to find a profitable and respectful balance.
From barbed wire and pipelines to cars and airports, data centers are just the latest “new cool thing” that could well be a “nuisance” (or worse) without a heavy dose of Texas-bred common sense to define how they are woven into the state’s good-neighbor ethos.
Of course, state lawmakers are already hearing from rural commissioners, activists, and taxpayers, as well as a horde of corporate lobbyists.
Texas Scorecard is documenting the data center boom and elevating the voices of real Texans who will be impacted. Just as importantly, we’re trying to help folks have the conversations that will define what it means to be a good Texas neighbor.”
If Data Centers want to make Texas home, they must abide by our values, respect our heritage, and protect our Texas way of life.

What an amazing afternoon with the Sons of Confederate Veterans at the Cleburne Chisholm Trail Outdoor Museum.
So much to learn about Texas history, touring the exhibits, visiting with incredible historians, and even firing a Civil War-era cannon.
Preserving history matters, and I appreciate the dedication of the men who work so hard to educate others and keep these stories alive. – at Cleburne, TX

So grateful to receive the endorsement of the Johnson County Farm Bureau — truly the best of the best. Our farmers and ranchers are the backbone of Johnson County and a pillar that supports every family and business in our community.
I appreciated the opportunity to have a thoughtful and productive conversation about one of our most critical long-term priorities: protecting our water resources. Ensuring a reliable, sustainable water supply is essential not only for our agricultural community, but for the continued growth and strength of Johnson County.
You have my commitment that I will support legislation to safeguard our water suppies — not just for decades, but for generations. Thank you to the Johnson County Farm Bureau for your trust, your partnership, and for all you do to keep our county strong.
